Good on the people who can afford it though and good luck.

Ahh, the old "two wrongs make a right" argument. It must be okay for MWO to charge a stupidly ridiculous price for their gold paint if a single other example of stupidly ridiculous overpricing exists.

I just went over and spent 80 pounds on a ship but SC has much more depth than MWO which is basically a FPS.
I love MWO but when SC comes out bye bye MWO (At least me spending money on it).

It's not normal. It could be argued that it's "sort of" normal in the free-to-play or MMO gaming communities, but I think SC and MWO stand out in the price of their digital goods, even in that realm. And just because we have money doesn't mean we shouldn't get value for that money. We still do in other areas of the video game market: sure, these "limited edition" and "season pass" and whatnots can make games in the non-mmo/ftp area a little pricier, but we're, from my perspective, still getting something of value and getting it at a reasonable price.
IMHO, charging someone $500 for gold paint is most certainly a "wrong." I don't know what SC is doing and I don't care, but if they have a similar pricing model, then from my perspective, they're "wrong" too. That's, in my opinion, two wrongs. Or is it my opinion that's "wrong", Heffay? Whatever you may think, the poster I was responding to was justifying outrageous pricing here by pointing out outrageous pricing elsewhere. "Everyone else is doing it" is a poor justification for almost any behavior in almost any situation, again, IMHO.

Psst! $500 actually gets you 25 mechs, one of which is painted gold.

Except neither of those arguments are "wrong". It's the new normal. The video game generation has grown up, and it turns out we have money.
Heaven forbid we ever spend it on the games we all grew up with....*GASP* How dare company's go after our money with there pricing schemes!

They'll reward the gold skin as the final social reward like they did to the Phoenix people and the flame pattern.

I agree that is poor justification.
While I find some prices ridiculous, I will note that over there the obscene pricings are for things you could eventually 'earn' anyway (In SC not MWO; there ain't no justification for it other than 'rare' and if there's only 50 left there ain't no rare to it at all), released in limited quantities, with 'lifetime insurance' so you can't lose it no matter how many times it is destroyed, and typically requires between 8 to 20 players to even be able to use it. So instead of one person shelling out for it, it tends to be a group/guild/unit/faction/whatever you want to call a lot of players banded together buying it for an entire group.
For example a capital ship with hanger bays, lightspeed travel, crewquarters, etc., that can perform repairs on smaller craft, handle missions, warp/hyperspace jump, etc.
Which is fine by me, I plan to be a pirate. And when I get there, find someone with their fancy capital ship, I plan to see if you really can board, take over, and commandeer such a ship.
Because I gotta say if you're manning a turret, while I'm walking your corridors, I don't think you're going to disengage and turn around in your seat fast enough before I pull the trigger. The only thing is I need to find a way to punch a hole in the ship or slip into an open hanger.
One of the nice features of a simulator.

Ah, the childishly entitled claim of unfairness. What I implied was that it is ok for a developer to charge whatever they want for their product and it is ok for us as consumers to decide whether we want to purchase that product or not. Charging an "outrageous" price for a non-essential product is hardly a "wrong", just because you can't or won't pay that price.

IMHO, making that whale bait a cosmetic item rather than something that would actually give any edge in the game is commendable, and definitely the "right" thing to do.

Inexpensive and nearly the same thing, although it's kinda like covering up a hole in the wall with a poster...
"Close enough" is the correct term
