Avid mountain biker here as well. I couldn't get a decent MTB for $500 short of paying someone to steal one. And at the end of the day if you added up my hours biking vs MWO... Ok, biking would probably win out handily, but that still doesn't make a $500 gold mech a bad use of my entertainment value. It's 1/8th what my next MTB upgrade is going to cost.

Yeah, a good one costs a bunch. Unfortunately, I can't afford that, so I have to stick with the more economical models. Mine's a Jamis - am enjoying it considerably!

...Besides, since I live in Florida, I don't need a hardcore one. It's not like we have actual mountains or anything down here!

I just need one to get me around the Florida Trail and other, off-road type areas I like to bike.

Still, $500 is a bunch of money to spend in this economy. Especially when you consider that for $240 you can get the exact same package sans the Gold Mech. That's not too bad of a deal because of the Premium Time, but the extra $260, for one BattleMech and its trappings, is a bit crazy sounding to me.
To each his own though!
