I could definitely see myself giving pure-stock matches a try, although leveling them in the public queue will probably be painful as hell...

Yeah, but you still have to level them in order to be on a level playing field in stock matches. And levelling a stock 'mech in public matches (against fully-tricked out & levelled opponents) is gruelling. Hence my earlier recommendation that they be upgraded for levelling in public matches, and then downgraded back to stock (after being Mastered or at least fully Elited) for stock matches. Again, I'm rather certain that the increased C-bill earnings gained from the boosted performance of an upgraded 'mech pays off the cost of the upgrades by the time you finish unlocking your Elites.
Not going to say that it's "easy" or "anyone can do it". However, I do feel that running stock mechs helps improve your skills over time more. You learn how to conserve your ammo. Control your heat scale. Etc.
I can easily see a Stock+ upgrades to make them work in public matches. I'd probably recommend more on the lines of Endo for heatsinks (as you can just remove the extra heat sinks and keep endo, run underweight, and still be considered "stock" for SMM and other stock events). For semi-competitive play, I do feel that stock mechs probably only need DHS upgrade, and maybe a ton or two more ammo (as we have double armor, and most customized mechs do have max armor). However, I've been finding that, for most matches, most of my stock mechs have just enough ammo to last a match, with very few cases where I wished i had a couple more shots. For example, my Hunchback 4G (AC20 version, right?). I tend to release my last shot and almost die at the same time most matches. Sometimes I live a little longer, other times I die with 2-3 shots left. 4J I tend to just run out of LRM ammo by the time the fighting gets too close, or it's time to close in anyway. (My goal with ammo based stock mechs is actually to run out of ammo before I die. Tends to be a good goal.)
Playing stock mechs in public matches I don't feel will be everyone's challenge. In your case, I get the feeling that you are a more competitive player than I am. (This isn't a bad thing.) I get the feeling that you like winning when possible, but it isn't your driving end goal either. I'll admit I'm not a competitive player. Winning to me doesn't overly matter. Thus, I like the challenge of using stock mechs more in public. (I also love to challenge myself with things, such as running stock mech only, in games like this.)
Now, this doesn't mean that from time to time I never wish to jump into my customized mechs. I enjoy my custom mechs as much as I do my stock mechs. There is a reason I made my stock only account, so I can experience the two when I wish, without hindering the other option. (Lately, I've been playing my Pseudo "King Crab with Dual Gauss and Dual PPC" (what I think will become the King Crab (for lack of a better word) meta). I've been running a Banshee 3E with dual AC2s and dual AC5s (with two tons ammo to make weight of dual Gauss) and about 5-7 tons ammo total (I think?) and two PPCs. Been doing better than I thought it would in matches. Not bad at least for a mech hat wasn't designed to use those exact weapons at least, with proper fire control.)
Note: I use my Stock mechs with modules, such as Air Strike and UAV. It really tends to help level the playing field a bit. That and using mechs that match your playstyle too...

If you have the mechbays on your account, just convert the mechs you might sell on the road to unlocking elites back into stock. It's what most people here do. (Except for the crazy ones, such as myself. Only one crazy person allowed, so you can't be my kind of crazy. Them's the rules!)
I get what you mean. I'm tired of Atlases that move as fast as most stock medium mechs (some exaggeration may be included).

So (excluding Cicada, which is a confused light mech), about half the medium mechs?

If by "confused light mech" you mean "best light mech", I agree.

Ok so Atlas with speed of 64 is like stock medium: BlackJack(Not all of them), Vindicator(Not all of them), Hunchback, Centurion.
Strange fact.

Yes we're still going! Lots of people come see but only the true Mechwarrior's remain. xD I'd just level Mechs with the updgrade then revert them to stock when you're done. I did a Wolverine recently and it was about 2.5 mil to revert to stock but made plenty more than that just doing the unlocks.
Definitely take a look at the Master Mech List on the site, look for the Mechs that you think fit your playstyle and then put your effort in to those:

This is exactly what I was coming back here for. Having to dirty my stat sheet with the custom trial mechs, but my cadet bonus is starting to pile up so I need to decide which stock machine to grab first. Unfortunately for some reason my stock account (K1 Black Box) isn't allowed to make this reply, strange.
Considering the BJ-1...

Be advised: the stock BJ-1 is the worst 'mech I've ever used in stock matches (I own twelve stock 'mechs). It has the least ammunition of any stock design I've seen, exceptionally hot & inefficient weaponry, and unusually poor heat sink placement & count. It often can't even use its jumpjets, because of the heat.

New accounts are restricted on the number of posts and where they can post for a limited time. I believe (and could be wrong here) that you get full forum access once you have finished your cadet bonus. Either that, or it's only a first day (or two) restriction...
Yeah. It kinda caught me by surprise as well...
