Is it permissible to NOT downgrade from DHS to SHS, but to leave the same tonnage open that WOULD be used for SHS and use only enough DHS to attain the same heat values as SHS?

the problem is the placement of the DHS. If you have them placed at a different position, then you have an advantage if one side gets blown off compared to when you would haev SHS,.

That's exactly right. Here's another good response on the MechForce: Classic forums that I think says it very well:

Why not separate the days into 3025 Stockmech Mondays and 3025 custom Wednesdays (only tier 1 tech allowed, but fully customisable mechs)?

That was the purist stock mech players still have Mondays, but players who want to play variants, pseudostock mechs and modified mechs within the tight bounds of the 3025 Tier 1 rules can still go all out on Wednesdays.

Any registered member can add to the MF:C calendar! If you wanted a day of "Tech 1, customizable" you could do it! Just put it on the calendar, start drumming up hype and get it going!

That's exactly how Stock Mech Eras (the rotating tech themed, Wednesday event) got started by General Taskeen and Stock Saturday by Psychofarmer.

Damn, sounds like I missed a fun night.

I've played in every SMM since week 2 until last night. And for a good while, SMM was the ONLY thing enjoyable about Mwo for me. I rage quit 3 times, but came back 2 of those times because I didn't want to miss SMM. I started in mid march, and most every night I played meant losing 9 out of my first 10 games, usually at least 3-12 and often 1-12 or 0-12.

Except for SMM. It was the only time games felt balanced. Almost never a stomp, exciting, and while I was terrible at Mwo, I was an averageish stock player. There were even games I had top damage in my HBK!

But, the last month or so, it had been getting more and more depressing to play. The last 3 times I played SMM, almost every game was a stomp, and through bad luck or my poor skills, I was on the receiving end of almost all of them.

The smaller turnouts, I felt, make it much easier for "heavy hitter" players to influence a match. 2 great players amongst 12 is one thing. 2 amongst 6-7 is another.

And to be honest, you, Carl, are part of the reason I was quitting SMM. The amount of times you've personally killed me the last three times I played... plus the fact I've never seen a raven SO DAMN SLOW just walk through my entire team with impunity over and over drove me nuts. Two weeks ago in a game on Forest Colony, I alphaed your legs 3 times and you just kept on WALKING through us. I don't belong on the same field as a player with your skill.

But, now it sounds like I shouldn't have given up... or maybe your games were good because one team wasn't burdened by me? I guess we'll find out next week.

For balance purposes, I would say the trade of the top player (most damage) from the winning team for the fat kid (least damage) from the losing team got us to a great balance point. So you're right Votantin, if balance isn't accounted for then it's just a stomp and half the group isn't having much fun. The SMM community is great and I really enjoy playing with the group.

On a side note, some teams suffer from a lack of leadership and will run about like some random pug. These tend to die quickly when the other team is organized.

Fair enough. I was thinking of one of the BJ builds that has all the HS in the left and right torsos...and simply putting far fewer DHS in there to make up the difference (It'd actually be a 2% reduction in heat values...since that's as close as I could get without going over).

Thanks for answering me promptly!

This just in, four common 'Mechs in Battle Tech canon just got a boost from "quirks" from 7/29 patch, I feel these quirks are most suited for stock designs, which is a good thing:

Centurion, Hunchback, Dragon, and Awesome

I tried to suggest "first dead switches" a while back and this "two top damage dealers switch" seems also like a version of that. I'm glad it seemed to work so well! As far as communication...we're all on TS! I'll post a tip though:

If you're the group lead:
- Your main priority is calling a target. Chassis and letter!

- and keeping the group together (letting them know where to move EN MASSE). Yell at people who are wandering too far (except your fast Lights)

If you are just there to kill, here's how to help the group lead/the team/yourself:
- STAY WITH YOUR GROUP and follow movement orders (ie don't go chasing lights or kills)

- Fire at the same target

- Call out what you see but don't clog comms! Examples: Out of ammo? Shh, keep it to yourself! Enemy light sneaking to the left? Call it out (Chassis and letter!) Weapons blown off? Shh, keep it to yourself! Enemy cored? Call it out (chassis and letter!)

My team is super strict on comms when we do 12's and this has been a HUGE factor...if you can't hear the calls, you can't follow the orders.

These things are easy to do even if you've never played with someone before.

The swapping players worked really well - and not just to move heavy hitters from team to team. I'm an average pilot; there were games where I was the fat kid being swapped to the winners (usually because I'd either driven a Locust and scouted or gotten killed early) and later games where I was swapping to the losing team because I'd managed top damage in a good match. It also meant that in some games I got to play on the same side as the excellent pilots who killed me last game. Makes the whole experience more about the fun and less about the stomps.

I recall we did have a couple of stomps, but they weren't common, and didn't sting too bad as the teams switched up immediately.

[nod] While the Awesome 8Q was indeed already one of the more popular assaults in SMM (and, indeed, my only stock assault), I do feel that it needed a little love, even in stock. The way it was, I was more concerned about being attacked by a Catapult K2 than by an Awesome 8Q. The latter's extra armor & PPC just wasn't enough to make up for bigger handicaps in speed, minimum range, and weapon location & elevation. On the dealing end, too, I was doing much better in my K2 than I was in my Awesome, and it wasn't only due to lack of practice with the latter. Hopefully, this change will make the Awesome a thing to be worried about, more like an Atlas, rather than something to be mildly concerned about.

The new intro means it takes longer to crank these out. Even worse, PGI has all of its newer mech chassis broken into 50+ pieces in their pack files. Like playing with a digital box of legos in Blender. But in any case, here's another video. I'll get more up as soon as I get the Spider assembled so I can render the intro segment:

Just wondering, is there a place to loiter for T1 matches on nights other than Mondays? I live in New Zealand, so timezone can cause issues. But if theres a place I can wait for matches, it'd be cool to know about.

So far, the Smoke Adders { Teamspeak 3 server } we've been using seems to be the "best" place for that, but the max number of off-night idlers (myself included) I've seen in there has been two, so -- unfortunately -- it doesn't look like there's any chance of an off-night match getting started.  Not enough people are intererested in SMM for it to be something that can get going every night.  I'd love it to be an all-day, every-day thing, but not enough people share my enthusiasm for it.

Well, I'm all keen for Stock matchs, whenever I can possibly get them. The FLD PP meta has really turned me off this game.

I Almost (ALMOST, but not quite) miss Pre-HSR days. Sure, it'd take up to a full second between pressing the Trigger, and actually firing an AC10, but at least you didn't lose half your mech to alphas from 600+m the moment you stepped out from behind your rock. Hell, before Clans showed up, I had started running a Stock HBK (The AC10 version, H?) in live matches. That was fun while it lasted. Actually suprisingly effective, you just have to watch heat.

Well, I'm on the Smoke Adders TS3 now, if you wanted to try to see if we could scrape up enough folks for a stock match. I'm really not holding my breath, though.
