It could certainly be discussed if there should be a rear cockpit hitbox. There would be quite a few issues when implementing them, because the cockpit hitbox is tiny from the front, and the "head" part of a mech is huge in comparison, which would make it too easy to headshot mechs (just think of the time when we had those huge atlas head hitboxes). If implemented, some serious balance fine tuning would be needed.
But, given the fact that PGI chose not to go the way of "head" hitboxes, but "cockpit window" hitboxes, noone should be cockpited by shots to his back, because it's simply a bug and a product of pure randomness.
