LOL I have 3 Batman games that at the most have 50% complete. They are fun but single player games take too much time with work and all my kids. I enjoy hoping in for a match or a few hours in this game. Stomp or not, the timing is perfect for my schedule. Hell I still have Planetside 2, BF4, SWOTOR, STO and others ready to go but they just aren't fun in a limited timeframe. This game works. Hell my new golf driver was more than 2.5 times then the highest clan pack.... and I usually only play about 20 times a year...
Bottomline: Why not pay for something if you enjoy it? If you don'the enjoy it then spend your money where you will. Yeah I have no clue how it will turn out yet my new driver hasn't made a noticeable difference yet but I still enjoy it and don't regret the purchase.
I spend a couple hundred dollars a month ammunition and reloading because I really enjoy shooting. When I'm buying it I can look at the box and it says exactly what is inside and how I can expect it to perform. When you pre-order any digital product that is not the case. That is why I don't have a Founder or Phoenix tag. I've been burned by so many games in the past that I'm not willing to spend money up front on something that I might or might not enjoy.
All the clan mechs, weapons, and mechanics behind them might be great. I hope they are. However, I feel there is a very good chance they won't live up to expectations, just like a lot of the Phoenix mechs. A little over a year ago when I was having a blast playing MWO for hours I had no problem spending money on it. Now I can usually only play 3-4 matches before I get frustrated and move on to something else.
Even if I was still having tons of fun, however, I don't think I could justify the price of any of the clan mech packs because at the end of the day they are not something you own. If the company that makes your golf driver goes under tomorrow you will still own your club and can continue to use it and enjoy it or resell it, the same as ammo. If you buy a Clan pack now and PGI goes belly up later this year then shuts down the MWO servers you can never use those mechs you paid for again.
I agree with your notion that it is fine to spend money on things you enjoy, but I don't think it is a good idea to spend $240 on something you can't resell and have no guarantee of even having access to for any amount of time. This is doubly true since we have no idea what the bonuses even really are in the clan packs and PGI may screw the pooch on things like hit boxes, omnipod mechanics, clan weapon values, etc rendering clan mechs underpowered, overpowered, or constantly fluctuating between the two extremes while they make ham handed attempts to balance them.
