should some of the smaller/faster mechs be able to cloak if so why. If not then why not.

No, It is not part of the gameplay or universe. They do however have Protective ECM and passive radar. Both of which can make you invisible to radar and pretty hard to kill.

I think this would somewhat pull people away from combat, because they'd stay close to base so that they didn't get base cloak-capped.

http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Raptor_II. The Void system is what your looking for and you just need to wait till the game gets to like 3080 or so to get The Raptor II the only mech built with the system. This is not a removable part it is built into the actual structure of the mech.

No, because this is not that type of sci-fi.

pretty sure that in canon being able to visably cloak is non existent or an extreme rarity. there are modules that can be used to hide yourself from radar, but there should be no straight up cloaking.

Nope. That's what ECM and mountains/trees/other enemy mechs are for.

If you ever see a unit that's invisible, headshot it immediately and report it.... especially if it's on your team.

This isn't Star Trek.

We aren't Klingons and Romulans.

This is 3049, this is the InnerSphere.

The Star League era technology if still in existence is either with the Clans out somewhere beyond the periphery, or buried in vaults on Terra guarded by Comstar. Otherwise it hasn't been invented yet.

You have ECM systems that render the masking of your mech's thermal, visual* and otherwise signatures from registering upon other mechs' sensory systems.

*Certain wavelengths of the spectrum; you do NOT become invisible to the naked eye.

It is a common trend in modern games just to turn invisible and go...

It's not in the canon and would make a poor game mechanic. :D

There is no cloak in the battletech universe, a mention is made of stealth armour in some books but it's normally portrayed by giving the mech ECM in game.

Also, I kinda think that an invisable mech would lead to camping matches ala WoT with I can see people hiding in bushes away from LRM strikes already ~.~ *sighs*

How do you hide a 10m 20tn "light" mech in a bush anyway?

The devs have stated that they wanted to stay as close to TT and canon rules as possible, hence no cloaking device... it's not canon. The Null Signature system is still many years away, based upon the fact that 1 real day = 1 in-game day, and the current year at time of launch is 3049. Hence, you'll have to wait approximately 10 real years for the Null signature system to be invented and mass produced.

No mech I know of has ever been able to cloak. This is Mechwarrior/Battletech not Starsiege.

It's 3049, I don't think we have cloaking devices yet. ;P

Thinking there was a null sig perk in one of the trees, but it only makes you appear to be shut down for 5 sec. or something like that.
