Why on earth would you want to pop a slow moving target with 3 damage, when you can slam 12 PPC rounds into him before needing to back off? If my target is in the open, the amount of damage i can do, particularly to larger Assaults like the Atlas and Bansee is borderline ********.
I hunt Assaults like Streaktaros and StreakHawks hunt Lights in my Awesome. Abuse the shield arms.

No actually, met this player in a match many hours ago.
Give the guy some pointers and the benefit of the doubt.
If needed, I can post the builds of all my Awesome loadouts.

I've dropped in mine into 464 matches with an average W/L of 1.03 and a K/D (Like it even matters) of 1.91.
I currently run mine with 3 LPL's, and 2 ML. Not an optimal build, but it is crazy fun to drop in.

So you only have the 9M and no other Awesomes? Since you already made the investment, at least keep it until you can Elite it. That can really make a difference in how it feels to play.
And see about dropping in a group, since Teamwork is OP!
So yeah, they are a big walking barn door and could use further tweaks, themselves. One thing that could be nice is to tweak the model, here's one that I like:

- AWS-Slim -
* Slimmed down center, moving side torso closer together.
* Slightly lowered shoulders to further reduce profile size.
* Arms remain same size to keep it protected from the sides.
* Narrower "thigh gap" to match legs with the slimmer torso.
* Still looks Awesome, and maybe even more so than before.

---------------------
v AWS-Original v

Even if it was wider from front to back as a trade-off for this slimmer shoulder to shoulder profile, I'd still like to have this redesign explored.
Another idea I'd like explored further is to setup better armor caps by chassis (even down to individual variants) so that the Awesome could be more armored than other Assaults due to it's stock Armors from TT.
But someday IS weapons should be addressed, as Clan weapons will seem to come with a few tweaks of their own compared to currently available weapons.

1) Vulnerable hitboxes
2) Lack of ballistics
3) Lack of Jump jets
4) Lack of high-mounted sniping weapon ports
Together, that leaves them rather mediocre. The only thing they really do have going for them is consistently good missile mounts - great for LRM's - and good mobility for a mech of that size, arms included. But that's about it, sadly.

Whats great is that with all those DHS I can fire two triple PPC volleys before having to tone it down. If I opt for a steady rhythm of 2-1-2-1-2-etc. I can lay down some serious firepower before having to worry about heat.
It's definitely not much of a brawler but as a midrange fire support mech it does pretty well.

This is a brawler, and no arty.
Yes AWS, isnt a greath mech, for me only problem he is too wide, so mybe some changes will help, but its not so bad, as people think.

If you'd like to share stats, then you can 'Print Screen' (should be top right of keyboard).
Open MS Paint or similar simple image program (I use Paint).
Then paste the Screen Cap into Paint, crop tweak and adjust what you want to share and save. Then you can use something like imgur.com to host the image.
You can also use Paint to adjust in-game screen shots too, you'd just have to find the folder on your PC.

Try that one. Runs cooler than the ERPPC's which nets you more damage over time. The fact that you have a Standard engine lets you survive alot better, most of the armor is front loaded too so make sure you avoid getting shot in the back. You can also swap out the PPC's for Large Pulse Lasers. It's a pretty good close quarters alternative.
*Always chainfire your PPC's, this won't trigger additional heat generation and lets you avoid overheating accidentally once you get close to the limit.
*Use your medium lasers against light mechs and stuff that gets under your PPC minimum range.
The Awesome is a difficult mech to get the most out of, but you can have fun in it even though it's not concidered a metagame friendly mech. Get the 8R and 8V/8Q to get it mastered.
Here's a faster Pulse laser build: AWS-9M Pulse.

Also, you do not really notice how nible it is with out the 2X on the movement buffs. Get it to double basic before you abandon it.
There are mechs that are a lot easier to level than Awsomes though. If you really like the look, stick with it.
