is there going to be limits on what changes you can make to a mech? cuz i have a lovely habit of changing anything and everything on a mech. you name it i will probably change it. then when the clans come in and we get the new tech will we be able to make the changes in our old mechs to new tech, you know like swap out our engines for an ultralite same with internal structure. or even better yet. will there be blank chasis we can do anything we want with?

just curious.

The mechs each have "Hardpoints." There are three types: ballistic, energy, and missile. You can only replace a weapon with a similar type weapon. For example, you CAN replace a medium laser with a PPC. You CAN'T rip out a Machine Gun and replace it with a PPC.

From my understanding you will also have the ability to add heatsinks, armor etc and they will be offering skins (paintjobs) as well if I am not mistaken.

Not everything. I understand there is a hard point system so you can't exchange a laser for an autocannon on an arm if the arm doesn't have a ballistic hardpoint for that variant. The different variants of the chassis are supposed to have different hardpoint allocation so some variants will be able to mount weapons the others can't.
That said, I haven't seen anything that says you can't swap out just about everthing else if you want.

i so hate ammo based weapons. if they do not give you the ability to swap those out this game is going to get lame fast. cuz i know i am not the only person who feels this way. even in the TT game you read some of the tech manuals you read where there are weapon swaps like an ac5 for a ppc.

Before clan invasion IS is not yet using Omnimechs so what other people said you can put certain weapons in certain slots. On Clan mech or Omnimech you can pretty much put what you want only weight is limiting you not so with older IS mechs.

Also the tonnage is limiting you big-time, you will be drastically limited to what you can or can't mount on scout mech vs. assault mech. Assault can mount much more heavier weapons than say scout etc. Space is also a factor scout has small amount of space vs. Assault.

But you want to equip weapons based on your type of mech and your type or style of play.

Can't wait to see all the crazy builds people make and eventual nerfing too lol

If I remember correctly there were mechs in the MW4Mercs game which there were mechs that didn't have any "ammo weapon" slots. I am sure this game will probably have something similar for those people that like to fit lasers and a boatload of heatsinks.

come on, honestly who here didnt swap out all their machine guns on the stingers, wasp and locusts for medium laser? and yes i know there are various weights on all weapons. doesnt mean i cant swap out the ac weapons on a blackjack and replace them with large lasers and heat sinks.

I do wonder how non hardpoint crit slots will work... I just haven't been able to play with the mech lab so who knows? Can I slap a small laser in the same torso as a ballistic hardpoint? What about areas that have no hardpoint? Can you even mount weapons there?

So many questions.

This is covered in the mechlab discussions, If there is no hard point no guns can go there. if you have a AC/5 you can replace it with any balistic weapon (provided you have the tonnage/crits) you cannot swap an AC/5 for a PPC or laser. That being said, Mechs will come with hard points that are not used, so if you have an AC/5 in your right torso, and an empty Energy slot, you can add a PPC there. (Provided you have open crits/tons)

Hopefully there will be different Variants of each mech with different hardpoints in each to give you a little variety.. but until the NDA is lifted on the beta or a developer chimes in on this topic looks like we are all guessing.

Pre clan Variants still won't let you truly mess with your mech the way omnimechs can. So until omnimechs arrive you have to be very creative with what you can put and use on your given pre Clan IS mech.

IS mech variant limitation is fine as it should be, any BT fan knows it by heart. Previous MW games didn't represent IS pre invasion mechs as they should. In general IS pre invasion mechs have all limitations and I love how the devs trying to mirror it. This is BT canon at its best :D

I bet when Clans invade IS is going to use Clan tech or start to use it. Later IS is evem making their own weapon version and even mechs based on clan technology.

i dont know about you but, long before the clans showed up i had removed all ammo based weapons from my mechs and replaced them all with energy based weapons or armor or heatsinks or whatever was needed on the mech.

Thats actually kinda against the lore of battletech, the current system is acceptable.
