I was talking about this today with a lance mate. Where is the most fun Elo wise in game? Assuming you have the skill to say practice and join a team to be in any level you want to be. I know for a lot of people it is probably not the top 10% or so that is super competitive and running only a few meta builds. But for most people they also do not want to be in the bottom half where it is all short bus players :P So is the most fun part of the game right in the good player range or upper average? The area where you still can be running teams but many types of builds are viable?

Seems to me many players should strive for that area instead of the top 5-10% where you have to use meta builds to be competitive.

Any thoughts ?

From the bracket you posted, "Good" is definitely the one you want to be in, and you always can tell when you're in it. Teams are organized on both sides, players listen to orders, and overall damage is relatively even between all players on both teams.

The top is not fun at all. When I drop and see 5 or so players that were all on the top 10 of the last faction challenge on each side, I know it's going to be a meta, arty crap fest, and if I'm not in any kind of meta build without jump jets, I know I'm screwed off the bat, and likely screwing over my team as well.

The average is where the majority of stomps occur, as players with very high Elo can get placed here if playing in a group with an overall lower Elo, and new players can end up filling open slots.

Top end of average is where I'd like to be.

Nothing but competitive cheese builds the higher you go.

I'd say either the Ok or Good brackets would give the most fun.

There is so much crap in the middle that it flip flops between bads, metatards, cowards, inept fools and the occasional good game.

The 'Ok' bracket is where everyone knows the controls but everyone is bad enough for you to get away with anything.
The 'Good' bracket is where all the competent people are hiding, those that have map awareness and functional builds but most haven't gone full meta yet.
That abyss between them? Etch!

My ELO rating must put me in the good bracket, but on the scrub team.....I see soooooo many 2-12 wipes....

I was quite enjoying the 5-6 days we got before the meta returned. Now it seems everyone is done playing around with their clan mechs, and I'm back to encountering full lances of Timberwolf poptarts instead of Dragon Slayer poptarts. I didn't think I was all that good, then again seeing some of these poptart guys you realize it's less about skill and more about how much of a chore you're willing to make the game. The top end elo wise is definitely elo hell, at least on the bottom you can **** around.

Also very curios how the new match maker next patch will effect this. If it works right in theory it would widen the "fun zone" to a much wider area in the average part of the spectrum.

Near middle is most fun obviously. Larger population means better chances for MM to balance games, and people tend to play all kinds of mechs. Up top is meta-only land, and down below is griefing country.

I wonder how hard it is to get into exactly the Elo you want to be in?

I would guess good is where the most fun can be had. Good players who don't tryhard every game.

Excellent is a crapshoot, everyone and their mothers are poptarting in anything that has jets and artillery coming down nonstop. An engaging experience this does not make with all the hill-humping.

How does someone know their ELO to know where we are at or where we want to be?

It is like a mythical thing.

Well, it's technically hidden but you can make a pretty educated guess in some cases.

Like for example...

1. I get put in a match with the tourney teams whenever they're queuing (Aduivo, Jaeger, etc) basically exclusively.

2. Assumption: They are in the highest ELO bracket.

3. Therefore, I am in the highest ELO bracket, QED.

On the flip side, Just because the kill count is low for the losing side, does not always equate to a stomp. I'm quite aggressive in my K2 in the early parts of a match, i will often charge lines and try to draw peoples attention.
When i start losing too much armor i will back off and "hide" behind fresher 'Mechs.

It's kind of like Starcraft, top end players will Blink out damaged Stalkers (Protoss) to the rear lines because a Stalker with 1 HP is doing the same damage as the Stalker at full HP.
The same principle applies in MWO, just because I'm damaged doesn't mean I'm no longer a threat.

IMO, a Stomp is only a True Stomp when the losing side has negligible damage across the board. If i lose 12 - 0, but my team has 10 'Mechs in the 400+ damage range, we simply got outplayed, not stomped, as the other team was clever enough to pull back damaged assets into a rear support role.

I really, REALLY wish we could get the percentile status indicator attached to everyone on the scoreboard. That way, You could see just how spread out or concentrated that damage was.
Seeing the enemy team win with all 12 'mechs at sub 50% means a good match. Losing to 12 'mechs at 90%+ indicates a real stomp.

Shouldn't the line start at the top left and travel down to the bottom right?

I have a few Alts... As you now know. The Elo of Bill Morghun (the alt from yesterday and today)... Stinks! The players are rude on comms, I was witness to IS team mates firing on Clan unit members. I thought this level of stupidity was for other games.

As Anton and Joe, the fighting is fierce, I die more often that I kill, but I get to do my job for the team win or lose.

No. The majority of players in any game are average. The truly terrible and truly brilliant are always the minority.

It was a joke....kind of
Or maybe i spend too much time on the forums, but i feel that most of the threads here are started by the "left side" players.
