The biggest problem with light and medium mechs is that their traditional roles have no meaning in an arena mech vs mech enviroment.

Think about what light mechs actually are suposed to do in the battletech universe: They are used for scouting... in our arena enviroments thats really not necesary.. once you meet the enemy the fight is on... thats it.

Theres no scouting ahead of the main force to check for ambushes, scout out enemy movements, enemy bases, weaknesses in the enemy defenses... this all means nothing in mwo since it doesnt exist.

The maps are kept "fair" since this is a game, there are strictly 12 vs 12 mechs, the only non mech combatants are sentry towers and they are allways in the same places.

Also there are no enemy bases to raid, no convoys to ambush, no enemy vehicles to destroy (wich light mechs are damn good at)

Same ith medium mechs. The only reason they exist in battletech universe is their status as "workhorses", they are cheaper then heavy and assault mechs but have more firepower and staying power then light mechs so they can take on alot more targets including fortified positions and heavier vehicles like tanks. They are however not really meant to duke it out with heavy and assault mechs. Furthermore since they are relatively cheap to get and to maintain, by nature they will be the most numerous class of mechs in the battletech universe by default.

All these reasons for their existance plays absolutely no role in MWO... it simply does not work. In an arena shooter where even the fastest mech is still rather piss easy to hit if you know what youre doing due to pin point convergence the idea of player avatars with little firepower and little armor is flawed by default

It takes alot of work to come out ontop if you play lighter chassis, and i applaud anyone who despite all the cards stacked against them can still pull it off (especialy you medium mech cannon fodder ^^) but at this point youre simply gimping yourselfe if you choose most lights and nearly all medium mechs, seeing that we have heavies that can reach the speeds of medium mechs and since medium mechs dont even have smaller models/hitboxes there really is no reason to play them.

Heavy and assault mechs paid the prize with cbills.. it was really expensive to keep them around and could eat up the money of a smaller merc outfit so fast that most of them didnt even bother. Most merc units wherent wolfs dragoons, highlanders or gray death legions.

They've had the data on what mechs we are piloting since the beginning and have done nothing to change it. In fact, they've done the reverse by making capping more difficult in Conquest and Assault and by adding Skirmish. C-SSRMs didn't help. And the Raven's legs are still deliberately and intentionally broken with the "temporary" hit boxes.

In hindsight, maybe it was not the best idea to try for 3/3/3/3 when the numbers were so very, very far from 1:1:1:1. But they've given no indication they want to make lights and mediums more attractive to pilot, so we might just be stuck with a half-baked matchmaking feature.

According to PGI, the rule of 3 system was expressly designed for just that purpose. Toe promote mech variety.

They truly believe it will. Many of us have explained why it won't. I don't think it's a matter of them not wanting to, I think it's more a matter of they believe they're right and their stubborness to admit otherwise.

PPCs-MOAR splash.

I believe the word you're looking for is "lightning arcing" or something to that effect. I sincerely hope you do not mean actual splash damage.

Well, I don't know about other people, but I was having some fun earlier in a wolfpack group with 3 lights and a cicada-3M to round it out with ECM (and circumventing the 3x4 rule) while still being a light mech for practical intents & purposes, had a few fun games doing that before people quit for the night; I've also been a fan of my jenner-7D for some time now, and it does seem like people don't give light mechs enough credit sometimes.

Of course, the fall damage change has been a little bit of a problem lately, although I won't act like it ruined the group's fun because it definitely didn't, and it's being looked into anyways so I'm reasonably optimistic that numbers will go back up.

No one plays lights because you are not rewarded or compensated for doing so. If you really want to have more lights and mediums make it worth players while and you will see more people piloting them. If PGI was really smart they would make it so that skilled pilots could make more running in the smaller mechs.

Dude, it's not that light mechs are kinda ****** or anything. You just like, need to, you know, L2P!! And not get shot!! Ever!! Stay in cover!! Never move!! Only n00bs get shot by stuff!! Real light pilots are basically invincible!!

Trust me in my low Elo games where people stand still I do MAJOR damage. Like, I got a whole 400!! Beat that metacheezers!!!

I think your right a new player is not going to know all this, I just tried a light mech again and got killed in less then a min so I stay away from lights (unless it has ECM you might last 2 min) to bad for this game that its so hard on, how do you guys say it PUG's, pug smashing is that the terminology. I think it would be a good idea to put a PUG over a new persons mech so you could stomp them quicker, what do you think.
