AC20 and every madman with a torso full of small lasers giggling madly inside his cockpit as you close range. Not terribly sane but amusing non-the less and it also puts them in range of all your short range weaponry which begs the question whos giggling now....

So you're saying when you got to point blank range you just hated taking the 1/6 chance of getting a cockpit hit with a fist of justice from one of the many mechs with hands? Must be a dirty clanner, running a cluster of Hellstars or something equally "fun".

But, fun aside, i do really hope for some kind of melee to appear, other that DFA and charge (though, these two were most commonly used in TT, as i recall). At last, we are to be piloting enormous moving chunks of metal, and if you get too close to enemy's "chunk", even if it has almost no weapons left, you should be wary of him landing his hand on your cockpit.
PS
And yes, i was pissed off like hell, when i ran out of ammo in a MW game and became a funny walking decoration...

I counter this. I kick, club, and punch with regularity. Definitely I do it a lot more more than I DFA. Maybe you're playing with a lot of gun boats where it's easier to stay at range and/or you have a ton of weapons on them? But if you're playing 3025 tech, and you win initiative, and the guy's leg is hanging by tatters, then a swift kick to the goods is what the doctor ordered.

Psh, what're you talking about? I see a Marauder bitchslapping a Wasp (or Valkyrie?), and some kind of strange half-aborted UrbanMech in the background trying to SHOOP DA WHOOP.
Nope o.o what you see is a Glaug happy slapping a VF-1A, that's a Regult in the background, and yes, i am a fan of Robotech. Does it show? >.>

An Atlas trying to shove their fist through some fool's center torso is going to have to have quite a bit of wind up and followthrough, and if that kind of power misses they would be expected to stumble a few steps, if not tumble over.

I know as soon as melee combat is/if introduced I will be out the door.
With a game centered around "realism" in the future setting, melee combat would be just absolutely rediculous. I am strongly against this.
Oh come on. Armed Forces across the world carry melee weapons on them (knives, bayonet ect...). I mean, sure, there is a sci-fi like focus on realism, but who can we say is an expert on giant multi-ton laser-shooting fusion-engined humaniod combat platforms? Mechs are unique. They don't behave like traditional vehicles, they have appendages and can perform complex tasks.
So if you're not circle strafing at 200m, and you're in an mech's face, and you haven't fired any weapons in your arm (or they're "cooled off"), I don't see why it would be strange for a pilot to utilize everything he's got (like those two limp arms he's carting about for some reason).
I do think kicking should have the risk of falling.

Generally at the point of physicals it's more, "Giant multi-ton no-more-laser-having overheated-fusion-engine beat-up humanoid combat platform."

Uh, if you're expecting realism, then Battletech/Mechwarrior may not be the place for you. There's wholes the size of houses in Battletech physics. It's worse than Star Trek physics.
In regards to physicals, nobody brings a knife to a gun fight, but if your gun is unusable, and your side-arm is unusable, and there's any angry fellow coming at you, what are you going to do? Maybe you can kindly explain to the fellow "Due to the No-Legging Samarkand Convention, in article 3.4 section 7.1.4a I officially request that you leave me alone, because punching and kicking are silly and I just want to go get a Slushie."

If you're a mech with little to no energy based weapons, and you're still behind enemy lines, what else can you do? All your ammo is spent, and you've got a 60+ ton warmachine... Seems logical to me.

I suppose it could be that me and those I game with have play styles which rarely bring us in range to melee, opting for taking tactical advantage of the map and cover than just busting face to face.

A side note, when clan tech happens I hope they will introduce the infantry battle suits.
