Flamers / People Who Make Me Want To Quit After Installing Yesterday

I'm all for constructive criticism, but getting called names for nothing other then people expected me to be somewhere else without giving a explanation is getting on my nerves.
I have only installed the game yesterday and the sheer hostility from some players in some matches makes me want to uninstall already.
So I would like to use this post to thank all of you veteran players that think they can be keyboard warriors, try having that big mouth on the streets you 16 year old little kids and see how that works out for you.
On the other hand, I would like too tank the few players I have encountered this far that do give constructive criticism which has improved my game play for the better.
Think that's it, needed to fume my frustration and bring to attention some of the community is poisonous enough to make new people want to quit.

Also, welcome to the game! This subforum is helpful and friendly, at least, so don't hesitate to ask any questions you might have here.

I have 2 groups, both consistent of 2 medium lasers on my Mech, do I understand it correctly when I say that firing both groups the same time generates more heat, then firing the individually in rapid succession ?

Welcome to MWO! I hope the rude players don't turn you off, playing in a group gives some relief because the more people you know, the fewer rude people. But the other team could always be twelve jerks.
Firing two or even four medium lasers at a time does not trigger ghost heat. But, chain firing in pairs does give you less heat buildup because your mech has a bit more time to cool off. At the bottomof the smurfy link is a chart for heat vs number of lasers fired. It goes 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 30.20. 30.20 is the point where ghost heat applies, the seventh laser adds more than the normal 4 heat per laser.

Any case, you'll learn the tactics and most popular methods of combat on each map. Some people may call you out for doing stupid things, this happened to me early on, but you learn. Most important thing to keep in mind: it's a team game. If you actively communicate your strategy, call out the enemy, or offer any helpful tactical info, you're doing it right. Communication is key. And if you've been typing away all match, trying to keep your team aware, and some kid who hasn't said a word all match (and is dead) comes out and talks some ****, ignore it.
[To all the pugs that say nothing all match, only to die 3 minutes in and say 'thanks for the help guys': seriously just go play another game

Out of habit I usually don't listen, or respond to dead players on my team. All they do is *****, or offer advice about the situation that we usually already know. (maybe 90% of the time)

Shot by Lordred. Flaming Raven is me.

Pun aside...
The treatment you received is not very common. You probably encountered some really frustrated players.
There are also those who think so highly of themselves that they cannot be humbled by the thought that anyone is actually new because they believe they are good enough to be highly ranked on the match maker. By shattering their dreams of greatness, well, shame on you.

That said, if you have any questions throw them our way. Welcome to MWO.

Since I usually pilot Lights and my beloved Locusts, there's a good chance I die in a match. If I'm observing someone I think is a new player, I'll offer advice. If they take offense or ignore it, I'll stop and just watch the game play out.
But I'm with you: MWO, like any online game with a significant number of players, has a few bad actors. Unfortunately, those types tend to be a LOT more vocal than the rest of us. Take solace in the fact that the player that goes on and on and on and on about his "noob team" that "sucks," is probably the same guy that died 30 seconds into the game by rage-charging the enemy and doing a whopping 10 points of damage.

But if you get insulted, report them.
Btw, got killed by a flammer troll spider in my ember. took him quite some time, though. I'm affraid of flamers, i can't aim for S* thanks to framerate drops.

My Tbolt 9S runs a pair of flamers and I can't tell you the number of people I've solo'd in that mech because they overheated. But that's not the kind of flamers the OP is talking about.

For the most part ignore anyone that is giving you advice while also throwing derogatory comments at you. There are some backseat pilots that actually give good criticism to help improve your play, you just have to filter out the bad ones. When your spectating after you die, take notes of how other players are using their mechs. Everyone has a different play style and you can learn a lot by just watching your teammates.
This forum is the perfect place to ask questions. The pinned threads at the top of this forum are loaded with great information for a new pilot. Confused about something? Don't be afraid to ask! I also know many players that post regularly on this forum are usually game to tagging along with you to better advise you on how to improve.
Good Hunting!

When you report them, please include the following informations (if you have them available):
- name of offending player
- type of offense
- date, time and timezone
- map played
- other players involved
- screenshots
- links to videos or other media you might have available and that will help the GMs
The game provides a screenshot function (normaly mapped to the print screen key). If you make one of the end result screen, you have most of the needed data already. You will find the screenshot in your game installation in the USER folder. The computer filesystem will provide you with the time and date of the screenshot creation.
All that said...
Welcome to MWO! Do not let these encounters limit your enjoyment of the game.

I'll admit, I've spouted a time or two, but usually because of how stupidly - not ignorantly - someone did something. Like purposefully running off because they're gonna save the world in their <insert crap trial mech here>. There's nothing wrong with not knowing what to do as a new player - just so long as you learn something (besides new insults) from it.

my question is did you ask for help and follow what the team was doing?
if you don't know what to do , that's one thing. but completely going against the team, or not asking questions is absurd to me - why not just ask for help in game or ask who is commanding or where to go?
I see far too many times randoms doing whatever they or standing still obliviously - atleast make contact with your team for guidance...

Conversely, I've seen a LOT of group players ignore randoms asking for help/direction in game.
When you're piloting, I can understand not stopping your assault and typing a bunch...but still...it's polite to respond, too.

don't take this wrong - beeing in one team with newbies can be really fustrating for experienced players - maybe some people are just releasing some steam. However there are also situations in which newbies do really stupid things - often without even knowing - in such situations the others players can't know if the players in question is a newbie (who does not know) or an idiot (who does not care) or an a-hole (who does it on purpose).
here are a few typical situations you should keep in mind and try to avoid (I'm not saying that you are doing this):
- beeing locked for missle attacks by the enemie and using a teammate as a shild for incoming missles
- blocking a teammate from moving - either by just stopping at a bottleneck (volcano in TT for example) or by walking so close to a teammate that he can't reach cover (because your in the way)
- standing in the fireline between the enemie and a teammate (have that very often in my DWF, don't know why many people think its a good idea to position themself with lights/med-mechs between me and the enemie since they usually have a lower firepower and prevent me from delivering mine)
- shooting teammates without any enemie nearby
- shooting teammates in the heat of the battle, there is a fine line between situations where people just can't avoid it and where people just don't care - typical example is a crippled enemie with no weapons getting close to a teammate, yes you can shot that mech, but since it presents not treat itself there is no reason to risk hitting your teammate
- showing the enemie the position of your lance with a stupid lightshow (it really sux when your are flanking the enemie and then an idiot in your lance just shows them where you are before you can strike) - keep in mind: Lightshows are never good
- dropping and Artillery/Airtrstrike on teammates
- telling the enemie information on the public chat

that said, Don't let them bug ya, if you notice often they are dead and mad.. Good players will give good advice though, like tell you ranges of weapons that do and don't work, or point out targets, or say things like Back armor exposed on XX mech.
But the best advice i can give.. If you get a match with some guy hurling wild insults.. when the match ends,, wait 5-7 mins to join the next.. you will most likely be off that guys time ticker for a while and can avoid him the rest of the night.. Now if you have this happen a bunch of times, my best advice is to stop playing for a few hours, or wait another day. Cause some nights are particularly hostile, and i endure, others you don't find a single one all night. So the nights i am not in the mood, i just try again another day. It's an online game, ya can't win ever time, and it's always fun to have a game with great people, but sometimes, someone spoils it. It is to bad really, but it is just the way it is.
Another tip, i would say is read the first 5 pages of the newbie forums..(not every thread, but i'm sure some will pop out as important) Read them, learn a bit, there is a ton to know... but most comes with experience.
