Some of the variants are. The BNC-3E was used by Marik Militia or Second-Line units, same with all the other Factions. The BNC-3M (in-game) and BNC-3Q (not in game, you have to build it and was a design stolen from the Capellans), however, are uniquely Marik/FWL.
BNC-3E: All Factions (in-game - built by Defiance Industries factories, which are located on 3 planets in FedCom space)
BNC-3MC: Magistracy of Canopus (not in-game, can be built)
BNC-3Q: Marik (not in-game, can be built - all 3Q's stolen by Marik, Capellans have fielded none)
BNC-3M: Marik (in-game)
BNC-3S: Steiner (in-game - built by Defiance Industries)
BNC-5S: Steiner (not in-game, can not be built)

It's a major handicap.
Do this for yourself. Build the same/similar build as any of the trial mechs that you have at elited out. The difference in performance is astounding.
I collected the "simple" 5-trial mech wins as an Achievement with the Cicada-2A Trial/Champ. It felt NOTHING like the mech I used way back when... despite that build being fairly solid and for the most part "optimal". This is even before we factor in modules.
While trial mechs are "playable", it's really like playing with one hand behind your back compared to a mastered mech with the same build.
I agree that mastered mechs are so far above stock trial mechs but at least they are "playable" for a challenge. But the challenge should be longer as the grind for whatever "goal" is always going to be harder for a new player.
It is a great thing for free to play players at least, it is not like money and exp gain is handicaped like other free to play games out there if you dont pay/subscribe so at least they are earning money and GXP while participating in the challenge.

This can't be stressed enough. The difference in doubled basics for cooling alone is night and day- it turns DHS that have 1.4x cooling power into DHS that have ~2.1x cooling power (you lose efficacy as the number of heatsinks climbs, though). That's a third of your cooling power coming from the skill trees alone, which makes all the difference in the world on a hot mech.
It's the same story with the agility buffs and other skills. When you play trials with no skill trees, it's like you're in a lumbering, hulking machine that creaks as it tries to shift dozens of tons of metal around. When you're in a mech with all skills doubled, it's like having a sports car or jet fighter, a sleek machine designed to turn fast and maneuver smoothly.
I know this is not going to be a popular opinion, but I wish PGI would just axe the skill tree. It doesn't contain any hard choices, doesn't reinforce role warfare or class specialization, doesn't take any skill to achieve, it's just an arbitrary bonus given to veterans for having played longer than new players. The anger would flow on the forums if it were just arbitrarily gone, removing the skill trees would rein in the complaints about crazy speeds from lights that the assault players hate, it would reign in the insane ability to twist and maneuver that got the Victors and Highlanders crushed under the nerf bat, it would stop crazy high energy builds and reduce time-to-kill overall while bringing back that "mech feeling" that the game had when it was new; it feels like a standard FPS now because it's so easy to move and twist that it feels natural like you're controlling a character, instead of controlling a character controlling a mech.

I'm expecting BUTTLOADS of Arty/Air Strikes, so more or less the same, with tons of Orions. There goes the fun.
I am also kinda sad that I do not own STK-5M.

And MC only discount to boot. Guess question is, was the Kurita sale downgraded or the other sales upgraded/challenges added?

Apparently stalkers are predominately manufactured by marik and steiner.

My guess might be that Kurita isn't as popular as factions like Steiner or Marik.

It was the "decision at the time".

Why do you care for Kurita...? You're wearing the bacon badge of honor!

I suspect the events planned didn't involve them for a challenge... as was simply planned for a sale. I'm sure 2 other factions will get screwed unless there are more plans in September.

I'd assume other sales/possible challenges in August will be Davion and Capellan (on account of the Vindicator). FRR is an afterthought as always.

FRR just used mechs from both their neighbors for the most part, that didn't really have many unique mechs attributed to them until later (like the Viking and Beowulf). So Im not surprised they don't get a sale, since technically they get 2 (Kurita and Steiner)

I personally didn't think Marik was in the cards really... *shrugs*
Whatever, I never really thought too much about the designations of the mechs based on their model numbers.

M = Marik (CDA-3M, AWS-9M, etc)
L = Liao (RVN-3L, CTF-3L, etc)
S = Steiner (BNC-3S, LCT-3S, etc)
D = Davion(AS7-D, CTF-3D, etc)
K = Kurita (AS7-K, FS9-K, etc)
There are some other ones that I don't remember, but none that are important to MWO.
you mean like the catapharact 3D was one of the Deiner chassis in the last weekends Deiner Mechbay challenge?.

This is before the Fed Com Civil War, so Steiner and Davion weren't really separate, ergo you will see Davion mechs mixed with Steiner and vice versa.
Keep in mind most Star League mechs don't feature this designation as well, the model designations started around the recovery of Level 2 tech and became more pronounced as the timeline goes on. Look at most of the mechs created between the 3050-3075 period and you will notice a lot of them are like this (not all though, I never said it was a rule, just a guideline). Not to mention spoils of war or corporations that produced for multiple houses and blurred the lines a little bit.

Hehehe, I can already imagine the contents of every thread on page 1 of general discussion:
"PETITION TO NERF SPIDERS & LOCUSTS
I was driving my mighty dire wolf with my 1337 skills and averaging 1337 damage. My noob team had all been killed while I hid under a bridge tactically shooting my LRMs at the enemies. Along came a spider and sat down beside me and blew out my rear CT! I tried to turn and instagib it, but I couldn't turn fast enough.
Direwolf is underpowered and needs a turning rate quirk buff. Spider and locust need bigger hitboxes and smaller engines!"
