In the sense that you mean, no.

IS 'Mechs are still quite fun to run, plus they have the ability to tweak speed and gear space that the Clan 'Mechs can't match.

However!
If you want to join a unit, clan, house or merc corp then you will more than likely need to grind out IS mechs to use in leagues and such. Even clan units join leagues and thus have IS mechs.
It's up to you and how you want to play to get the best experiance that MWO has to offer.
So, no I do not feel I wasted anything grinding my IS mechs. I still use them.

I want to love my Victor, but I never really poptarted with it and I think there are better options for brawling.
But that's actually most of the IS Mechs (chassis) I own. I avoided a lot of the mechs that are clearly crap, because of hitbox issues, hardpoint locations, etc.
I abandoned my highlanders completely, zero fun playing them after repeated nerfs due to forum crybabies.
Just like my VTR isn't fun anymore, again, due to endless tears of the delicate princess panties brigade.

If you haven't already leveled out the "good" IS mechs, then IDK why you are wasting your time with garbage like the quickdraw, awesome, dragon, trebby, locust, wolverine, griffon, etc...

Unless you enjoy the game for the game itself.

It wasn't a waste because my time spent before clans was enjoyable. I am still leveling IS today, the recent mech bay challenges have led me to invest in the Banshee. Day One Vindicator incoming as well

These two mean that you'll devote time, money and energy to things that work today, that wont be as effective tomorrow.
Therefore, because I am not a competitive player, I just play for fun, bought some heroes for fun, and try to not "work" leveling mechs.
When the nerf hammers come or clan mechs appeared, I didn't give a ......
You know what I mean.

Not at all... while I've been running my Clan Mechs more lately to get their skills up... I still fall back on my IS Mediums a lot, they, by far are my most played Mechs... and I have way more run running them than anything...
Matter of fact, I just got my Master slot on my Griffin 3M unlocked... woohooo... sad, but I had been just getting all elites done and converting XP to GXP... but figured with the way the new Module slots work I might as well stop that practice...

In some ways, I actually prefer my Treb to my Stormcrow. Make of that what you will.
