I tried that "Thumper" build... I just can't do it. Hate using ballistics.

VND-1R

You'd be surprised at how effective this build can be.

I'm sure it can be . . .but wouldn't it be even more effective if you built the same 'Mech with a Blackjack 1X? You'd lose the jets I guess, but you'd gain better hardpoints and much better quirks for the weapons you're running.

I don't know. With the quirks it has, 'mobile FLD sniper' is the only loadout the Vindicators really seem to have the potential to do better than a different medium chassis. The velocity buffs making one of the only 'Mechs in the game that can still reasonably snipe with PPCs, and PPCs (or heavily range-quirked LPLs) are the only guns, weight-wise, that you can build a fast FLD sniper around.

And it can do that right now. It has just enough space and just enough cap to mount a fast engine and two PPCs + backup lasers. I don't think there's anything intrinsic to the 'Mech itself that's holding it back. It's just the gun. PPCs are not in a good place right now, even when heavily quirked. What the Vindicator really needs is a little more base PPC velocity, less PPC projectile terrain-clipping, and better HSR.

If your having trouble with your St Ives Blues, then might I suggest something a bit different. 2xlargelasers 2xStreaks Max JJ Max Engine and add some dhs or ditch one dhs and get a medium laser for the head. Ive been getting some interesting results with it. Most people like the AA for speed, and thats great, but the 1R really does deserve another look, more firepower and more HS, and when your brawling the extra speed of the AA isnt really needed (depending on situation of course)

The greatest advantage of this mech is its JJ abilities, keep moving and keep flying, and you can do well with the vindicator line.

This is the first build I've seen that has me interested in the St Ives... but I'll wait to see what this next quirk pass changes before I decide.
Still, thanks for the contribution.

I absolutely love my vindi's when fully upgraded I usually go for fast builds with lots of pew pew.

Vindicator-1AA (With Speed Tweak this mech tops out at 116.8 KPH)

XL engine 295
4 MD Pulse Lasers
1 SRM 6 (One ton of ammo)
4 Class IV jumpjets

I consistently do 300 damage with 2-5 Kills and have a ridiculous amount of fun brawling in this mech. =)

this looks interesting to me. Might have to try it. I finally maxed the engine on my R, 4JJ, BAP, and 5 MPL.

Wish the vindicators had better quirks, they are all pretty similar and pretty lame. PPC (non ER) quirks don't make them any better. that 90m minimum range just kills them for me.

Also I always do fairly well as a skirmisher in my Saint Ives Blue. Large Pulse, Two Medium's, and two SRM 6's with Artemis and JJ. Pretty deadly brawler if you know how to use it especially with quirks and efficiensies maxed.

So post quirks what is everyone doing with the SIB?

I can see two obvious builds which are the 3xMPL/SRM 6 combo or the 2xLL(or)ERLL/SRM 6 combo - both running an XL245 and nearly max JJ's.

Funnily enough both put out the same alpha with the MPL build having the greater DPS but poorer range.

Other then these two though, any other ways to go with this mech? Standard engine builds or LRM skirmisher etc?

How does this mech rate? I love the look of it which is why I am tempted to get one and while performance is not 100% the most important thing, I still like to win and if its sucky I'll pass on it.

I've been doing 2xLL+ML+2xSRM6A, 245XK and no JJs

So does anyone else feel that these things (Vindicator's in general) are a little sluggish on the stick for a medium?

At least with the VND-1R and VND-1X. I feel like i'm piloting a Cataphract or Jeager not a Medium in the 1X. Slow to turn, and torso twist IMO.

I tried, I really did. I had vindicators and sold them, re-bought them when quirks came. It still feel slow at 110 Kph ... much slower than a blackjack going 99 Kph. Also turns are not amazing and the PPC velocity means nothing when the arms are so low slung you shoot the environment instead of the target. Then you try to poptart but that 45t armour doen't whitstand so much damage when you hover fr a few seconds.
Sorry, not the mech for me. I am no talented pilot and it really shows on this mech.

I posted in this thread back in October. At that time I was a bit down on the Vindy. However JeanMarks posted some builds at that time that I had some luck with. Slowly but surely my opinion of the VND changed. Now it is one of my favorite medium mechs, actually it is one of my favorite overall mechs.

Since the quirks came out I have been using PPC's on a lot of my builds. I am not sure if it is the quirks or if I have just gotten better, but in the past I was terrible with PPC's (and ERPPC's as well). But I really like them on the Vindy.

I would post builds, but I have about 4 per chassis that I have been using/experimenting with. Once I narrow them down I will post my favorites. For now the best advice I can give is use the Vindy to support your Assaults (and heavy's from time to time). They are great for keeping lights of the backs of Assaults and when it comes time to brawl outright they are largely ignored for bigger targets.

One thing I am working on right now with this chassis is the effectiveness of AMS. It seems in competitive play LRMs are not really used and is PUGs you can really avoid them. So in PUGs I usually equip it to help keep some of the LRMs off the Assaults on my team.

Aside from that I have found the chassis to be great for max upgrades. On most of my builds I run Endo and FF. I even have some that use Artemis. One thing I can say is this chassis is great for Pulse Lasers and PPC's. I usually pair LPL with MPL or PPCs with ML. Usually I can max out a STD engine on the 1X and 1R. On some occasions I will put an XL in there. I have found them to be very XL friendly. On my 1AA I always use and XL 280-295 on my builds. I have found that even my builds with both Endo and FF usually can fit an XL and max JJ's. And another bonus is they seem to run pretty cool. I rarely overheat and can usually fire at will.

The only thing I do wish is that the 1X and 1R had an engine cap of 250 or greater. I would really like them to be faster, but I am good with 89-93kph.

I have been enjoying them so much I am thinking of getting two of each chassis! That would save me cbills on upgrades and downgrades each time I change my build around that is for sure. The only chassis I do not have is the ST Ives. I am probably going to crack and buy it. My hope is that they will come out with a champion variant so I can just get a mastery pack! LOL

Thanks for letting me ramble on.

If you go for the St-Ives be aware that it plays quite differently from the other Vindy's which are very PPC focused whereas the St-Ives is more of a laser/srm combo user. Playing it as a little brawler has been difficult for me since but it works well as a quite little striker that can get in and out of combat.

So far my favorite build is : St-Ives

It's simple and not very imaginative but it works.

I Really enjoy piloting the 1AA. I run 2 PPCs with a XL295, max JJs. It's the best poptart in the game IMO. Just did a match the other day and got 4 kills 871 damage.

I wouldn't go that far. I really like my Vindi's. I load them out taking advantage of most if not all of their quirks and they play very well. I will say I didn't get them at first, but after I got the hang of them I really enjoyed them. Although I am not sure you will ever see many in CW, but in pugs you can definitely compete with them.

Vindicators are trash. I recommend avoiding this mech altogether.

liking a mech doesn't make it a good mech. and that's coming from someone who absolutely loves his VND.
