What prompted me to remember this game? The post on Legging of course.

Old chromehound player here! Use to fight for Morskoj. It really got me into mechs.

Great pacing for the mechs:
*The mechs felt big in that they stomped/lumbered for the big ones and the smaller ones while feeling nimble didn't seem zippy(except the mario carts) or boosted(no Amored Core jets!)
*You could duel and dodge incoming fire with a single step in some cases(cannon duels anyone?)
*Aiming via the gun sight was an interesting success, plus using recoil to keep your chained weapons on target was a great building challenge
The garage rocked:
*Never I had I seen the variety of weapons with which to choose, not only cannon or howie, but within each class of weapon each gun had its own muzzle velocity, damage spread/damage type, recoil, ammo amount, etc
*There seemed to be infinite options, now certain designs ruled each update that came out, but there were always counters in the ruling design
The maps:
*Okay, lots of maps. Some of them down right beautiful except you didn't have access to them unless you batted all the way there and the boosters always controlled which maps were in contention.
*The diversity of the maps allowed there to be lots of different strategies employed, I enjoy anything where thinking has a positive impact on a game over just charge and shoot
The lobby:
*ZOMG horrible, hard to get matches you wanted, couldn't filled out lobbies from outside your squad, tons of other issues
No more rant for now

I often rolled with a squad as a command hound. Information warfare was a big deal in that game with the COMBAs and such. I'm glad MWO will also be putting a heavy emphasis on this type of gameplay.
Other times I would just smash faces in my quad-legged triple double-cannon monstrosity. Next to no health but oh the power...

If the Devs stick to their guns and ignore much of the forums it will do well. If they listen to the forums like FROM software did and may nother doomed MMOs, then it will decay rapidly.

Running around with my 8 pack quad legged Sniper monstrosity, I could rape any mech from halfway across the map, and ohh it was fun
I miss it

i remember my favorite build was this sorta four legged bus, where i had a cluster of canons in the center all surrounded by armor plates on three sides, all held up by those custom connector lego parts heh.

most memorable match? running into a squad of "wonderbread" mechs...all white mechs with red, blue and yellow spots, we were laughing so hard, they handed us our own bottoms

I played chromehounds for... about a year. Started out as a little soldier just looking for a home, ended up hopping into Base Busters INC. and met a good group of guys, we ended up shutting down that unit and starting up Demonic Saints... which I co-founded...
Man those were the days. I even had a mech or two that tried to imitate the look of some battletech mechs
I miss that game, I really do, it was one of the best games I'd ever had the pleasure of playing on console. I hope that PGI takes a page from their book when it comes to the universal war mode for MWO... the way the map worked and everything just felt right.
They wonderbreads were a top-tier booster squad... but that didn't mean they didn't have some skills.
I'll never forget playing against japanese pilots... man those guys were FREAKY crazy.
