Getting in a group is extremely easy to do. There are several teamspeak servers for that purpose. You can even ask to be in one from in a game and be invited for the next game.

But most don't, because that's still more effort than many people are willing to consider.

I have been in a couple guilds / clans. Good players and people but the process takes something away from the game. I most often solo drop just to get a couple games in (don't always have the time to put into the game that I want) rather than spend 10-15 extra min to get everything else in line.
Simply streamlining the process with common sense features would go a long way keeping players interested and help hook new players.

oh well.. but still there have been way more challenges for solo players, while people like me, who HATE playing alone were forced to do so if they wanted to participate...
now PGI finally tries to "encourage" people to find groups and push the teamwork character of the game a bit... i think it´s just fair if not a good move...
and who knows, some may find that it´s well worth the effort...

This is true, and annoying that they have p[ut up the challenges BUT not announced what it required to take part.

You're new...er...nevermind. Dude...You should know better.
That's not how it works.
It's a "group event" which means that you will need to be in a GROUP.
By the wording, I surmise it must be at least 4 players (i.e.. a Lance).

Well, if it is in this way it works I won't play at all.
I don't want to play just to let a lance win/lose the prize...
Me, a target... no way.
