Fair, all the way. This isn't real life, this isn't a sports field, real money isn't at stake here, and I'm not really being shot at. It's just a bunch of dorks sitting in front of their computer playing a game together for fun, and kicking someone while they're down isn't part of my definition of "fun" by a long shot.

That said, I will still do what I can to win, but I'll try to level the playing field whenever I can (jumping to a team that's short handed or using kit that I'm not familiar with against a less skilled opponent, that sort of thing).

Old debate, new game...

Old article, still applies: http://www.sirlin.ne...win-part-1.html

If you don't like legging, find a tactic to counter it. Going for the weak spot is just good strategy.

Remember, if you are not playing to win, then you are playing to lose.

I don't like the term exploits as that term tends to get picked up by the whinner that's not fair crowd to describe things that are not exploits. Bugs, and hacks shouldn't be used. Beyond that everything is fair game.

Both. I won't use any hacks, cheats, trainers, or other things that aren't part of the integral game experience thus I am playing fair. If I take advantage of something another player did wrong however I'm still playing fair.

What amazes me is how many bad players and poor sports will cry "Hacker" when a skilled player comes in an cleans their clock early in the game or preforms an action they can't do or didn't like. And the ones that cry "Bot" or "AFK" when a person has a unique playing style that they don't understand. They really believe that if you don't rush in and suicide, or if the battle goes sour and there no chance of doing anything but trying to save your self a big repair bill, yep you must be cheating!

I would rather lose to someone playing to win, than win against a scrub.

Well I think most people say play to win, but fairly. You can play to win fairly and honourably. Providing noone uses hax or cheats or anything, in most cases its relativley fair (To some extent lol). Any opportunity I get for an honourable fight ill mark out the grid and lets rock. That being said not everyone is going to go for foes their own size, sadly thats just how it works ^^

But from me both. B)

All's fair in love and mech-warfare.

What exactly constitutes playing fair? The game is designed a certain way. If I play the game according to its design, and take advantage of 'mechs' weak points for the sake of winning, then how is that unfair?

Playing "fair" is about as vague as it gets.

For me if it doesn't get your *** banned it's fair. Simple as that. For others it's only fair if you play the game in its original state (so without stuff like players mods in WoT for example) or like some of the posts here to remove the mechlab and only allow stock configurations. If you want to play like that, fine by me, but don't say others are being unfair because they're making use off all the options the devs gave us. It's not them playing unfair, it's you gimping yourself.

Having said that I voted both. I won't cheat, thus in my eyes I'm playing fair and I definitely play to win.

Null vote, I play to have fun. And that will be whatever my twisted, sick and demented mind feels like doing during the match!

Unless the person is hacking, playing to win is playing fair. Who says its a different thing?

Mixed bag... targeting weak points, legs, head, ambushing enemy WHILE outnumbering them... all fair. it is war. That being said... accepting surrender or say a situation where your team still has 10 mechs and only one enemy left.. would be more my style to take him on one mech at a time.. he's pretty much toast but can go down fighting instead of just being executed.

I hope this sort of thing becomes commonplace. Down to one enemy, duel it out!

Both for me. I play to win AND to have fun, but I play also to have a fair nice fight.
Winnig by every dirty trick does not at all satisfy me, it is imho way more satisfying winnig a clean fight because you were better... or beat the odds after becoming trapped in the "monkey team".

imho dirty tricks and cheating are always the trademarks of those who cannot win otherwise.

How do you play dirty in a video game? If its a possible outcome due to the programming then its a valid choice. The only way to play dirty is to exploit a part of the code that wasn't intended to be used as it was.

EDIT: As in an exploit, sorry. I realized how derpy that last statement was.

Play fair, definitely. I play for fun, and I hope the other team has fun too. And fun doesn't automatically mean winning.

If we outnumber the enemy, I'll go easy on them. If it's clear they're new and still learning the basics, I'll go easy on them. Of course, when my team is outnumbered, or carrying newbies, then it's on and I'll go all out to win. But I've never enjoyed being on either side of stompfest.
