Wind Tempest. By play Fair, I mean not going for the weak point of the mech, instead tearing out the armor on the torso and such to get at the squishy prize beneath. A lot of people in Mechwarrior 3 and 4 saw things like Legging and going for the back, arms, whatever is cheating.

Thats not "playing fair", thats "being incompetent at the game".

I will not knowingly use an exploit or cheat to win... aside that I will do everything in my power to win this includes things the masses consider "unfair" or "cheap". Victory is the single most important thing on the battlefield.

Play to win. It's the Developer's job to make sure playing to win is also fair.

That said, I won't use exploits or bugs.

Ok, I have a question about history: There has to be a reason that those ridiculous e-honor rules about legging/arming/heading/whatever appeared in the previous MW games (apart from "hurrr space-bushido" and "hurrr clans").

I never played the earlier games online, so I wouldn't know. But it had probably something to do with bad gameplay mechanics (like: a legged mech does not die, but cant do ****), right?

It's a fair bit of both actually.

Fairness is for Real Life. I will, however, NEVER cheat.

That being said: In a game like this only victory counts. If you dont want me to shoot your back, dont show it to me. If you dont want me to shoot your legs, dont show them to me. If you dont want me to shoot your head, wear a MechHelmet. (Too bad those are not in the game... :( )

I fully expect you to exploit any tactical mistake / Mech Weakness of mine - as I will yours :)
Looking for and trying to use your Mech Weaknesses are half the fun - protecting mine is the other half :D

One of the problems of this thread is that there are more than one definition on fairness present.

If fairness is interpreted in a way like everything which is intendedly programmed to work so (like beheading a Mech or legging, building Laser- / Missileboats / Alphastrikers) is a valid way to claim victory and everything else (like abusing bugs, exploits, cheats or hacks) is defined unfair, then I can only encourage everyone to play fair and hope for relentless punishment against those who do not.

If on the other hand fairness is misinterpreted in a way like everyone of us must act compliant to Zellbriggen rules (or something near to that), I say to you Dracs and Clanners - stuff your high and shiny honour to a place where the sun does not shine and prepare for me coming for your backs and legs and especially when you are disabled, in trouble or in battle with the 3 lancemates of mine.

The game has certain ways to damage the opponent, but if you found a bug that permits you to abuse, that would not be right. That's why I chose "play fair"

Play to win, of course. Just because you won't exploit your enemy's weaknesses, doesn't mean they won't exploit yours.

well in war the 2nd winner is the dead guy so I play to win but this does neither involve cheating nor using glitches or what so ever. Just saying if I see a chance to win a fight I end it to preserve men and material :)

I play to have fun.

I prefer losing in a spectacular fun way to a boring easy victory every day.

Alot of good points made in this thread, and i'd agree with most of them, the two options are not exclusive but neither are they always the same. Everyone would play to win, but they would do so by what they would refer to as fair. Personally i would play as tactically as i could to try win, but I wouldnt go out of my way to be a dick to the other team

I don't play with hacks or anything, but all is fair in love and war.....

I remember years ago. The first Multiplayer online combat game I played was America's Army.

I used to plant myself on one end of a bridge, in amongst some trees, and cover the rest of the guys trying to get across the bridge with my SAW, and nail anybody from the other side coming over.

If my team got bogged down, or advanced far enough, I'd move up, pick a position, and repeat.

Halfway across I would hold, to the death quite often, until we got the flag, or I got overun.

I used to get screamed at for "camping", and "cheating". I never understood how holding a position and providing supporting fire was "cheating", but apparently the only acceptable way to play was to make repeated, mad scramble scuicide charges, and use of tactics like fire and manuver was apparently an unheard of concept.

Long story short, I didn't play that one very long after encounterring that.

To me, legitimate real world military tactics, even modified for gameplay, IS fair play. Of course, with a futuristic Mech, that even means NEW tactics developed in the heat of battle. For me, as long as it's possible without modifying the game, or using trainers and such, it's legit.

Personnaly, I'm more worried about people defining effective tactics as cheating, just because they don't know what to counter with.

This isn't a chivalric contest. Bring it, go hard, or go home.

There are many definitions of fighting fair. Usually they involve forcing the opponent to play into the speakers strength. I will bring my all every fight, I owe it to my allies, my team and to my house.
