Honor is a handicap? What would The Dragon think.

I play to win. That said, I try to limit "cheap shots" and I would also rather win in such a way that there is no sane argument against my win other than I was better then you.

I don't play in such a way that after 6 months I can look at my K:D or my W:L and smile with pride cause it's so amazing. I would rather have 1 fight a week where I straight up out skilled someone. Can we relate this to pool/billiards? Skill gets rewarded with "Nice shot" and a "sloppy" or "accidental" pocket gets rewarded "that was garbage, my shot"

In mech2 you could easily focus down an enemy's leg and just leave him out in the middle of nowhere. To me this was a game design flaw, and as a result I didn't aim for legs. Now, if missiles or splash damage somehow heavily damaged a leg, you better believe I would focus it. But, then I would finish him off quickly and let him respawn.

I guess I'd rather have the respect of my opponents long into the future then 1 win today.

*Edit* I read some other posts and now I have to say: To those who think there is no honor or "fair play" in war, you are certainly right. This is not a war. This is a competitive multiplayer PC game. Saying "Hey man war is dirty, get over it" is an excuse play like Jerk and rack up kills. Remember, unlike other online games (Modern warfare etc) which have ENORMOUS player bases, MW:O will probably be a much tighter community. How you treat an enemy today hopefully will not be just a one off encounter with a nameless faceless opponent, but someone that you will most likely face again and will probably remember your name.

LOL Let them grab a new Mech so you could blast them away again.

Just means more salvage right? :)

(shush, yes I know there's no salvage in the game... atm)

A fellow Marine once said.... "Win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat" :)

This is war. War is not fair, neither is life.

The way to win a war is not with honor, but with overwhelming force and by exploiting the enemy's weakness.

Honor is a handicap that is to be exploited. That is how the Inner sphere eventually beat the clans.

Lastly, everybody has access to every thing in the game so as far as I know, anything goes on the battlefield.

Dude... (or dudette if the case may be appropriate), you need to change your sig picture. House Kurita is all about Honor.

As long as it is not an exploit/spam/cheat, do everything in your power to destroy your enemy. He'd do the same to you...

It's all about the C-Bills.

I have a coaster that states, "Winning isn't everything, wanting to win is". I always play to win, why else would I play if not to win? However I do not believe in cheating. Cheaters suck!

I voted fair. Reading up on lore on sarna, I came across the Knights of the Inner Sphere. They seem interesting, and their combat rules would be fun to play with. Then I read that they all died. So maybe not. Regardless, do other factions have units similar to the Knights? Or was that a FWL only thing?

IRL, you'd go for the kill every time. Nice guys in combat finish last and die.

In this simulation go for the win plus there is no death penalty :)

If it were about single combat, one on one? Then I'd fight honorably, giving the best fair fight I can.

But it's not single combat. It's my lance against those that wish to destroy them. I'm not just playing for my victory but my teams. So I'll go for the kill every time. Because if I don't it's unfair on those that are counting on me to back them up.

Though that said I'll probably be scouting a lot so the worst I'll give you all is a slightly scorched paint job.

play to win. that doesnt mean you have to taunt, ridicule, or do stupidly obnoxious things. Just play to win. Use cover, tactics, and remove enemy mechs that can be removed before they withdraw from a bad tactical situation.

play fair sounds like you believe play to win is unfair or that rules beyond what the game has hard coded in should be in effect somehow.
Good news though. your both in the match under the same hard coded ruleset. Its fair. Now play to win.

If you're playing with respawns in a mode, prepare to get all your weapons plus a leg blown off. Better know how to self-destruct, I'm thinking. It's not nice, it's not fair, but neither is war. Be it real or digital. I really hope people learn how to dish it back on MWO and don't just quit off for losing to 'cheap' tactics.

First and foremost, play for fun. If it's not fun, why play at all?

It's just my opinion, but I think it would be interesting and fun if players did observe a kind of "Mech Warriors code of Honor."
I think that would make it stand out from the 100s of other MMOBA type games out there. It's a game, not a war. I think focusing on fun, before winning at any cost, will help the game grow and be successful. Successful game = improvements and new content for years to come.

But, from what I read in these forums, I'm pretty sure this will be a win at any cost game.

there is no right or wrong answer, in a fight you will exploite any weakness, if you don't, your target will.

Of course we want to have fun and winning is fun...right? If you go out there and you are not trying to win (remember no cheating) you are taking the 'fun' factor away from your team mates. If your team loses because you fought with some misplaced sense of honour, they are not going to like you very much and furthermore you interfered with their idea of fun.

I love playing MechWarrior and I have fun even when I lose but I do have more fun winning. How about you?

Well I for one have never started a fight I did NOT intend to win.
So the question is kinda redundant at best.

WE ALL PLAY TO WIN.. period!

That said 1 question may be asked "are you a fair play player" and to that I say YES!

As in I will never cheat. As in I will never buy a victory.
(unless it's a battle where all may be doing so.. like gold ammo in WoT for clan war)

I will always allow a player to hide as I take the base.
As long as they stay hid i will be a gentleman do my job and spare the pilots life an whats left of his/her mech.

In real war kill um all an let god sort it out is best motto.
But here in game land where that pilot will repair and be back to face you again...
Always a good idea to be firm but polite as you kick some butts.

I play to win as a team. Of course, that doesn't rule out sneak attacks and stabbing enemies in the back.

Actually people play to have fun or rather to satisfy an emotional need or want. Whether that comes from winning, losing or something in between or else is entirely individual. I guess you could argue that in having fun you 'win' but that's not the traditional context or application of the word 'win' in the competitive sense in most people's minds I suspect.

As someone once said "Sometimes when you win, you really lose, and sometimes when you lose, you really win, and sometimes when you win or lose, you actually tie, and sometimes when you tie, you actually win or lose. Winning or losing is all one organic mechanism, from which one extracts what one needs"
