I give mediums two roles: Hit and Run, and Formation Changing (probably their strongest suit)

Mediums are the first line of mechs that can equip the heavier firepower, such as Guass, AC20, multiple SRMs ect, but still retain enough speed to reach cover before retaliatory strikes.

A light's hit and run is going to be little more than harassment until enemy numbers are thin enough or the target happens to be isolated. A Light cannot survive long enough to take good shots while there are still enemies around (certainly not as well as medium could) A heavy is usually going to be committed to an attack that a medium would be able to comfortably break off from.

Formation Change is the Mediums strongest suit though: have you ever been in a match where your team just bunched up, got stuck in one place and then got picked apart from all sides? The Medium is respectable firepower that can quickly reach one side of the team's profile on the map in order to hold it, or to extend the number of guns facing a target. When playing with a group that communicates, the Medium (or mechs specialized for speed and firepower like a medium) are invaluable to adapt to enemy movement.

Granted "Formation" is one of the hardest concepts to arrive in PUG play, but when it does, the Medium shines.
