One thing to note on that map is that all the grey lines are fibre lines that are still under construction. You can click on one and see when it is expected to enter service.

I see now, Telstra doesn't have a cable that runs right across the pacific, their line stops at Hawaii. So rather than paying Optus to use their Sydney to LA line, or piggy backing off the US-Japan cable from Hawaii, they go via Hong Kong and use one of the cheaper Asia-Pacific lines.

A little bit of help would be great. I'm not familiar with these types of things at all.

I'm experiencing a huge jump in ping since the move... from an average of 250 to 390-500.

I'm trying to take a screenshot of the tracert, but I'm having some challenges. The tracert disappears the moment it finishes, so I don't even get a chance to screenshot it. Any suggestions on how I get it to stay on-screen?

Just looking at the locations it throws up, it looks like I'm going from Melbourne to Sydney to Tokyo to Singapore to Italy to France... the tracert screen disappears after this last one, on number 21...

I'm currently with iPrimus, which I think also uses Telstra lines. Thanks!

Use the command: tracert mwomercs.com > C:/out.txt

That will create the result as a text file on the C: drive.

Thanks Jon, ping was better before the move but can live with sub 100ms pings.

View PostJon Cunningham, on 12 September 2014 - 06:49 PM, said:

That's fine - many routers start dropping pings, especially if they are under load, because they're focusing on delivering the other content. If that router dropped "100%" of all packets traveling through it, you wouldn't even be able to reach the subsequent steps of the path, let alone our website!

So long as *your* ping time is fine (it is; 85 ms is slightly better than what we get in the office, which is 87) and your actual packets aren't getting dropped / gameplay isn't being affected, you're good!

Mike....

As a sysadmin myself with 16 years of experience in IT Systems & Operations, I am feel I am required to speak up here.

You are seriously pressing up against BOFH regulations against giving "Forbidden Information" to your user base.

I spent 4 hours on the phone with my ISP- showed screenshots, graphs demonstrating packet loss, etc. - their only solution was "we can send a technician out to your home". It's really hard to explain routing issues to "level 3 tech support" whom does not understand basic routing. It's not the latency, it's the huge drop in registered hits. I rarely even drop with a serious group anymore because I look like an a-hole putting down under 300 damage drop after drop. Still getting kills on targets I work, but it's like I'm not getting credit for the damage I do. Gauss works ok, missiles are iffy, and lasers are a total waste of time. I called every ISP i could find that might offer service here. 768k DSL or the time warner connection I already have are the only options. Move the servers back
:( (Not really, I'm glad ping got better for a lot of you guys!)

Fwiw, ping zapper has helped a bit. Can't get wtfast to work with mwo (disconnects when dropping) but it's metrics show an improvement in link quality while doing stuff in the mechlab. Ping zapper has a free limited trial.

Telstra being called out as crap by people from all the way from Canada amuses me greatly. Good luck getting them to do anything if there's no profit in it for them.

If any Aussies looking to jump ship i can tell you my ping with Internode wasn't affected by the move.

I'm one of the few on Telstra that has had no change to pings at all.
So yea, damn you mostly bad Telastra

Curiously enough, I reside in Finland and my ping actually increased after the data center switch even though the data center moved physically closer to me. My ping used to be between 125 and 130, now it's between 145 and 150, sometimes jumping all the way up to 180 or even 220.

Coming straight out of Texas, ping used to average between 70-90. Today mwo, and only mwo is giving me pings of 190-220, which makes maintaining the high elo life style to which I have become accustomed to difficult. Nothing in this traceroute appears particularly egregious, but I'm an expert in trigger pulling, not fiber opticing.
