Well we got him into a stock spider and he seemed to have fun for the most part. Messaged me on Steam after he left with comments such as "This game is way hard", "We spent a lot of time waiting", "I die too fast", and "didn't really feel effective". He was also overwhelmed by the sheer amount of info required by organized play, and with any luck he'll stick with it but my guess is he's 50/50 atm. I hope PGI is taking notes because this data is as raw as it gets and a prime example of how typical user/gamers react when exposed to MWO for the first time.

edit: Oh on a side note, apparently the PUB queue is so harsh now he only earned about 6.5 million cbills after his cadet bonus ran out. I remember earning 11m after establishing my IS account. Either you need to extend the bonus limit or up the earnings, because as a new player he's screwed into smaller mechs for a long time and that's not cool.

He can't have everything in one go. It takes time.

Better he learns to play the game properly in smaller more nimble mechs, as opposed to ones that he can't navigate out of fire, if your insistent on grouping with him do so in a bigger group, it will take the pressure off.

Well I can understand why he felt he wasn't doing any damage in the ride he/we suggested for stock play. 1ML and 2MG isn't going to do much. You friend should get an SDR-5D for pugging next. Have him play with that, fit it out with ECM and DHS and go to work. The ecm mech (and being a spider hitbox mech) will help him survive longer and get a better feel for the maps and how battles play out. Something like this will cost 4.6M cbills, he can upgrade to endo if he wants later...or buy it, leave in the single heatsinks, take out some of the jump jets to add ecm and ML's. and go from there.

BTW, the 5V is actually a pug beast with the right build, played the right way ;)

A 5V stock will explode at the apex of his climb if at full thrust on Tera Therma after the JJ nerfs. :(

One of the big things I see with your post is the crippling matchups in the group queue. They really need to change the MM a bit so that similar group sizes appear. Six two mans aren't the same as a 12 man. They should make it so that the largest group on the other team is no more than 2 people larger than the largest group on the other team.

This thread teaches two things:

1) Cadet bonus is way too small in the paulconomy apparently.

2) You can't put a new player with one or two friends to learn the game because MM drops you in the group queue and its stomp after stomp. This is bad. I'd much rather upset Mudhutwarrior than have new players be forced to solo in order to get balanced matches. There needs to be a way for people in trials or on the cadet bonus to play in solo queue even if they are in a 2 or 3 person group.

Because MWO is a pain to learn on your own and group queue is not the place to learn the game.

well, team challange which was mostly 4 4 4 vs 4 4 4 was grat, but 8 +X vs other small groups is not good, its crap.

Hahaha. Ahhh that made me laugh. Yeah, I remember back when you were only allowed a max of 4 in a group, too :D

What I don't understand, is ostensibly if you want your friend to enjoy the game and if he was sitting right beside you and wanted to learn on fast mechs.
Why not let him use a fully kitted out Jenner or Ember on your account and you play on the newbie account ?.
Right now 2-3 man groups have a rough time in the group queue, everyone knows this.

So what you do is bring a brand new player into the game and put him in a trial mech in the worst possible conditions possible....
I'd almost assume you were trying to sabotage his new player experience, and don't start with a garbage argument that is shouldn't be like that etc...
The fact of the matter is, right now that's how it is and anyone trying to introduce a new player to the game should be trying their best to give them the best new user experience possible.

Why not just spend a few bucks and set both of your accounts up with premium time for even a day and do 1v1's with him, or once you've set up two premium accounts have however many of your steam friends join you play 12v12 in house games....
There are a myriad of options available, instead of choosing them you come here and place blame......

Battles need to last longer and, Mechs need to be more durable.

We know. Many players have been asking for an internal structure increase for a while.

But instead of making mechs more durable they just added modules that sped weapons up 12%. So mechs die even faster.

Hold on there chief your tin foil hat seems to be on too tight. This isn't about blame, this is raw feedback I'm providing out of my own free time and good will for PGI's benefit because not all new players are willing to provide it, let alone casual ones from an untapped market PGI only dreams they could break into.

At no point did I say the guy was sitting in the room next to me. He's just a bud I game with on steam from time to time. Also I took him to the community run Stock Monday event where he was able to pick up valuable advice and have fun in a controlled group environment. I'm more than happy to help people out if they need more info about the event or just check out the web site here > http://mechforceclassic.enjin.com/. It's casual, fun, and matches actually feel like genuine battletech/mechwarrior. That's just one night per week tho, and he's not going to earn a thing spending all of his time in private matches, so I advised him to get some solo drops in to save up and maybe we'll group some more later on. I just hope the lrm spam and stomp groups don't drive him off. So far it was nice seeing some fresh faces for the stock matches.

Or one can say that the whole LRM issue is way overblown and he didn't see it as an issue.

Given that they are the only weapon system that needs an upgrade (Artemis), module slots (advanced decay), and a laser slot (TAG) just to do average damage and can be completely shut down by a 1.5 ton item (ECM) Id have to agree

I wouldn't let him anyways so no worries. There's a bunch of well know players with multiple unique accounts tho, just so long as they don't try to play more than one at once using bot/multiboxing software. Hell I remember Joseph mentioning he's got one for each weight class.
