10 minute Charger concept sketch......
Posted Image
trying to keep as much "TRO" as possible in it, but accentuate the needed changes for it to have any chance at success in MWO.

Primarily, it absolutely MUST be XL friendly. The best way to do that is massive arms (which it already sported large pauldrons) and comparatively small STs. And part of the vicious circle is twist speed.... the bigger the engine, the better. Making XL use a must.

Secondary outlook was it is a large scout. It needs beefy legs to support it's mass going at the speeds it can achieve.

Anyhow, if folks like, will start cleaning up and making it into a "real" sketch.

Wow! 10 minutes sketch?

Can I change my vote for the Charger?

I would change my vote for the Charger if they added Light Fusion engines a few years early. The problem is the Charger just doesnt work without Light Fusion engines. The Charger concept benefits greatly from MASC too.

I would way rather the Hatamoto-Chi over the charger, so my vote is for the Zeus.

These posts and polls are fun.

Charger would be an incredibly nasty mech once you kitted it out. All energy mech with...5? 6? energy hardpoints? Could be nasty. All that said: Zeus, bebbeh...

My buddy's favorite mech is the Zeus. In fact, I know he'll throw money at his screen as soon as PGI announces the ol' Zeus. So, please, for the sake of my friend's sanity and PGI's prosperity, let's bring out the Zeus!

Edit: It seems like those who want the Cyclops want it because it (might) bring something new to the IS assault class. However, those who want the Zeus seem truly passionate over it. Like it's a member of their family or a pet. Don't break up a family. VOTE FOR ZEUS.

The current difference between Cyclops and Zeus is less than 1% of respondents. I wonder what PGI's margin of error is or if they even have one.

Yeah but the Cyclops is still 90 tons. So at worst its a faster Atlas with less armor.

But the Zeus at best is a worse Victor.

The Zeus could be at best a better Victor because it seems unlikely to inherit the Victor's agility nerfs (the VTR was nerfed due to poptarting bonanza back in the day, but the ZEU would be new and not guilty of such abuses).

Russ said the Victor nerfs are likely to be reversed during the IS quirk pass.

They probably already have plans for that one and just needed to come up with another one because of the IS Mech Pack that everyone wanted.

works great with XLs. Victors run them like a boss, why wouldn't a Charger?

In the event that such does happen, then the ZEU will still have more missile tubes for Lurm boating (SRMs as well, because Victors run out of tubes real fast) and *maybe* high-ish torso energy mounts (depending on the artwork). It would be a matter of brawler (VTR) versus mid-long range fire supporter (ZEU).

Zeus will become another Orion. The masses clamor for it, it arrives, the overwhelming mediocrity of it shines through, nobody drives them now, and people that do are made fun of.

That's what "people are passionate" gets you.

Of course, sans any serious nods to Info Warfare? Cyclops is just at meh. But it's meh with 10 tons more to play with.

You can have the Cyclops, I'm here in the hope of a Binary Laser Cannon and the Zeus has always been the best shot at that.

Choosing the next assault is hard. I like all three options - probably like the Zeus the best, though it overlaps a lot with the Orion, Victor, and Awesome. It's also extremely faction-specific.

The Cyclops would be cool if we had a more elaborate Information Warfare pillar that gave it cool stuff to do. As it is, it'd be a fast assault, which isn't a bad thing to have.

The Charger has some awful variants, but it is very fast, and a few of the less-common refits are interesting. Still, having the base variant produces an automatic stinker "bad robot" - the CGR-1A1 has awful firepower, and it's all in one arm; and while the Cappellan CGR-1L is somewhat better stock, it still groups too many weapons in the same arm and has poor armor.

The Cappellan CGR-1A5, however, has a much more potent close-range loadout containing a heavy autocannon and SRM racks, though it requires an engine downgrade. The DCMS CGR-3K is a LosTech upgrade built as a jumping LRM support platform The CGR-1A9 has a similar loadout, but uses Succession War technology that forces and engine downgrade).

The Awesome-like CGR-SB "Challenger" variant was introduced as a one-off variant developed by a merc unit in Battletechnology magazine, but is generally accepted as canon.

And, of course, the DCMS made the Hatamoto-Chi/Hi/Kaze/Ku/Mio variants using old Charger chassis with downgraded engines and better weapons...

Tough choice.

pipe dream.

9 tons for twice the heat of a large laser, but only 50% more damage. Sounds like Ghost Heats wet dream, lol.

Only gets ECM if PGI decides to as a nod for info warfare. No extant versions available come with it, stock, in this era.

CGR-1A1 does have stinky firepower...but it's spread with 1 laser in each arm, each side torso and the head.
