Mechs Have No Flavor....

All the mechs are just a collection of hardpoints with some minor quirks to differentiate them (high mount hardpoints vs low mount, torso twist range, etc.)
Most players and nearly all comp players it seems will load the exact same weapons in just about all mechs. If it fits, AC20, if it doesn't Gauss. Squeeze 2 or 3 in if possible. The more the merrier. Add some PPCs. There, done.
Light mech? 2 PPCs. Everything else is "Lame".
And so it goes.
I would love to see the restricted hardpoints from MW4 brought in (as unpopular as I know that those are around here). I think it is the only way that you can really make all the mechs have a place in the system and not become cookie cutters as much. I think it would also go a good way to preventing the pinpoint alpha problem that we currently see.
I going to go back to the original argument for this as it is still very valid in my opinion. The Pult K2 should not be able to replace machine guns with AC20s or Gauss. Those slots shouldn't be able to go above AC5s (really AC2s in my opinion), The Jager should be able to carry larger guns. Most lights shouldn't be able to carry a PPC at all, much less 2 of them.
Though I have to admit that I love when people spectate me in game and call my builds "Lame" because I'm not running the "super-Optimized" Standards and when the match ends I am either in the middle or high end of scores. No easy mode for me thanks.

The issue is this: bad mechs. Some mechs are already bad. If you limit customization, you'll make them worse (ESPECIALLY lighter mechs, which have enough trouble competing with heavies and assaults as it is).
I'd hate to be playing a game where the only viable mechs were those that could mount PPC's and Gauss.

Hey, my Griffin is grape flavored.

Overall I prefer the game to have as much variance and customisation as possible, anything that takes away from that (for example ghost heat), is a bad thing imo.

Think things like:
HBK-4P gets a bit extra range when using medium lasers in the hunch.
jagermechs gets improved ballistic speed on AC2/AC5.
We need more things like that which makes mechs feel unique.

Plus, modifying a chassis to do what you want adds unique "flavor" which is why people share Smurfy loadouts on the forum all the time.
It might not hurt to add a stock mech lobby (which it sounds like the OP really wants), but overall, I think there is enough uniqueness to the mechs.

*Drools*
Sorry, my brain trailed off reading everything after that little piece of awesome idea (that everyone has probably already been clamoring for)
Have you been drinking too? Cheap port, the great muse. I'm impressed with my ability to type.

^ This.
Hard point sizes only further restricts the number of mechs that would be used. I have yet to see anyone proposing hard point sizes explain how this increases the variety of mechs in use since A) It would be more restrictive than the current system and thus means there are mathematically less options, and B ) It would remove a number of mechs that are used today only because they can be modified to become a desirable configuration for players.
It makes the variety significantly less.

... Welcome to MW:O - Meta edition.
Keep in mind there's a segment of this community that if they had their way we'd all be be piloting nondescript beige boxes with 1000 hit-points and a single sLas.
Be thankful level heads prevail!

Stock Mech Mondays have a red hot go at it, i'm told. From the reports around the taps, it's a jolly good time.

Know what really carries that?
The fact that not everyone has maximum armor. I personally love it.

It would be great to have that option in the "selecting matches" button, so, the pilots interested in could play every day STOCK!
