No, it's not about "L2P". It about fun. I personally HATE Assault mechs, they are way to sluggish. Even most heavies aren't my taste. I can play them, yes, but most of the time I don't want to.

I wholeheartedly agree that tonnage limits is the way to go. I suggested this the instant Paul brought Dropship Mode back into the conversation.

I imagine they'll still have to limit people to no more than 4 'Mechs (for technical reasons, it seems like that's about the most their servers can handle), but tonnage limits would go a long way toward restricting people from bringing the biggest 'Mechs in each weight class.

I would think something around 240 tons would be just about right (average of 60 tons per 'Mech, which makes sense to me, because 60 tons is the median weight in the range of 20-100 tons - also, this is exactly the amount of tonnage needed to take two 100 ton 'Mechs and two 20 ton 'Mechs).

I really, really hope they do this.

I am no programmer, but I don’t see why from a technical stand point more than 4 mechs couldn’t be accomplished. Remember, there will still only ever be 24 mechs in battle at one time.

Seems like a lot of you like the idea of four mechs with a tonnage limits and no weight class restrictions and I could get onboard with that as well.

Even though I really want to see someone run 10 locusts for lolz!

the weight would need to be experimented with. at 250, I could bring in a 25 ton mech. and all 3 of my timber wolves.

One of the engineers (Karl maybe?) was worried that each person having 4 'Mechs wouldn't even be possible (though it looks like they've gotten past that hurdle), but I doubt they can push it much beyond that.

Isn't Tonnage Limits, BV, and 3/3/3/3 ment for BALANCE? Not for restricting someone from using what they want.

Being restricted from using what you want sucks. Tonnage Limits hurts people that like Light Mechs and Assault Mechs with the set limits of 4 Mechs. 1/1/1/1 hurts everyone equaly besides the people that like all Weight Classes and hurts the people that like Mechs on the lighter end of the Weight Class.

From what I can tell. The set limit of 4 needs to go. Get rid of that and Tonnage Limits/BV can work. The person talking about people abusing Consumables with 10 Locusts on a 200 Tonnage Limit is a problem with the Consumables. Not the Mech limit. Limit/fix Consumables and the problem is fixed.

That's why I suggested 240. You could only bring a max of two Timberwolves :)

I have to say im not a big fan of the 1 light 1 medium 1 heavy and 1 assault that we'll have to bring in the CW dropship. I would much rather it have a tonage limit and we decide for ourselves what combination of mechs to bring.

So for example 4 mechs maximum (with a chance to bring less than 4 if that is what you chose) but lets say 250 tons limit. Can bring 2 100t assaults and 2 25t lights or 2 75t heavys and 2 50t mediums or 3 80t assaults, etc... This way people would bring the mechs they are comfortable with (if you are a light pilot only, bring 4 light mechs and leave ~100 tons free if that is what you enjoy). It would also give a greater purpose to all the lighter mechs of any weight class that would let you mix and match closer to maximum tonnage.

Or you bring all 4 and show who the best actual mech warrior is!

Also the tonnage limits ONLY benefit light pilots. Eg. You can bring your 4 embers and I want 4 TW's because I like them and that's the mech I prefer, there's absolutely no reason you should get to pilot your 4 lights and I'm stuck playing various heavies+lights+mediums that fit in to the tonnage spec set out.

I could bring a bunch of spiders and troll you so good with the bad hit reg as well.

I believe PGI has already said the MM programming for 10 vs 12 and drop limits would be too difficult.
Thats why I suggested 4/4/2/2 vs 3/3/3/3, at least for official missions.

lol! Now this is an interesting take.

If we had collision damage, they'd be cost less than a cruise missiles, and work at taking out mechs.

I don't agree.

There needs to be a upper limit of the number to be brought to limit over running by allowing many light mechs while tonnage needs to be limited to not allow a lot of heavy mechs into one drop by any single player.

FYI, CW doesn't take into account any of the stuff that MM does now.

As soon as one side is filled out, the battle immediately happens. There is no match making involved except if players belong to the correct Faction/Unit.

Tonnage limits would simply mean that there'd be a lot of people dropping with three heavies and suiciding when their 20-tonner was up because "I only play [insert (usually heavy or assault) 'mech of choice here]".

Just learn to play one of each weight class and drop with those - or use the Champions that will be provided if you choose not to choose.

It's no big deal, you can play your single variant as much as you want in the non-CW queue.

How would that be different in the 1/1/1/1 system? There would still be the 1 light mech that this hypothetical player would dislike piloting and he would still chose to suicide it if he were that kind of a person. With tonnage limit this player could at least have the option to make a settup that doesnt have the (in this situation) light mech that he absolutely hates to pilot and would suicide.

Yes tonnage limits indeed. The 3/3/3/3 1/1/1/1 has killed 40 tonners, 60 tonners, 20/25 tonners, these mechs have no place. Why would you bring a Vindicator over a Shadow Hawk, a commando over an Ember, a Dragon over a Cataphract?

Its not about piloting all weight classes its about trying NOT to phase out half the available chassis.

I would rather take a Vindicator over the Shadow Hawk. Hell, I'd rather take a Locust over the Commando and Ember both, but again I love my Commando and would rather take it over the Ember.

Compromise. People must bring 1/1/1/1, but they also have to operate on a tonnage limit of 235 or so. That way, if you want to bring your Atlas and Orion, you better enjoy your Cicadas and Locusts.

Hmmm...? This does solve the following:

I do however think no one should be forced to pilot anything they do not like, so strictly tonnage limit does have that going for it.

Then I could take 3 of them in still. timber wolves are 75 tons. 75*3=225. I would just have to take a light in that is under tonnage if they force you to bring 4 mechs

I was saying that bringing 4 'Mechs would be required.

And running a locust under-tonnage wouldn't actually make it under-tonnage. It would still take up 20 tons of your drop deck, even if you kitted it out so that it only "weighs" 15 tons.

I think someone mentioned earlier that another way to balance Clan vs IS could be to give IS more tonnage to work with. Could be 240 for IS and 220 for Clans.

Also, in a tonnage based system, I see no reason to force you to bring 4 mechs. If you have 20-25 tons left over and you don’t bring a locust or commando, that’s your call.

So as an example: 250tons 4 mechs max.

PORS:
-something to use some of the 3 mechs you had to buy to master 1 for
-more choice in what you bring
-not forced in to a weight class you dislike to pilot (even if you actually know how to)
-easy on the go balance between IS and Clans by adding or removing weight of the maximum tonnage per side
-gives the skinny (lighter) brothers and sisters of each weight class more weight (pun intended :P)

CONS:
cant really think of any...can you?

Make it 1-1-1-1 AND a 235 limit.

With 1-1-1-1 all you'll see is Dire Wolf, Timber Wolf, Stormcrow, Ember. Why not, right?

At 235 and 1-1-1-1 you end up having to be selective; bring a DW and TW you'll be forced to bring in the Cicada and Locust to balance out... Or you can mix it up quite nicely with a Stalker, Hellbringer, Stormcrow, Jenner.

Still under the limit? C-Bill bonus.

Prevents people from bringing the best of 1-1-1-1, keeps people from bringing 3 TimberWolves and a 'quit' mech, and helps maintain variety on the battlefield.

It's probably easier to have one of each chassis limit. It will be a pain to herd the cats into agreeing on Mech weights. However, if the cats can be herded I think a tonnage limit would be preferable. But remember, we're dealing with flippin' cats!
