Russ--

In 3050, the Black Knight is an extremely rare mech seen mostly with ComStar.

The Grasshopper is a 70 ton jumper, which we already have a Tier 1 example: the outstanding Cataphract 3D.

What we need is the Marauder. Make it so!

Just looked over both options on Sarna. Neither of them is overblessed with intriguing variant possibilities, but the Black Knight…man, I don’t even know how Piranha would generate three distinct variants. That and IS energy boats are about as useful as Clan ballistics boats. Certainly the Knight looks amazing, but the Grasshopper’s got a lot of potential awesome in its socks as well, and I just don’t see either of them being a big game changer mechanics-wise.

I’m going to throw my vote behind the ‘Hopper, rather than the Knight. It’s the sort of ‘Mech I could see luring me back to the IS side of my hangar for a little bit, whereas the Black Knight is basically an IS version of a Laser Vomit TBR but with lousy IS lasers. At least the Grasshopper’s got some speed and jump mobility to it, and Sarna specifically calls it out as a zombie. Could make for some interesting builds.

Hey, Russ: is there some sort of roadmap for mechs you're planning on implementing and a rough idea of when they'll be implemented?

I can understand the secrecy, but I'd buy these things fresh out of the box if I knew what was coming and what to save for. I gave a pass to Sparky and Anansi specifically because I didn't want to spend money on them if the next "mystery mech" was something I'd want.

What MWO does not need is a lawsuit from Harmony Gold...

I'm shocked at the results thus far, to be frank. I completely thought this was going to go a different direction.

I don't know, 6 MLs and 3 LLs would be a lot of damage with a 1 second burn time..

Yeah I mean the Grasshopper can't do anything special. Jump jets and some energy weapons isn't all that useful, at least you can laser vomit with the Black Knight.

Black Knight. I love arm shields almost as much as I love laser boats. Grasshopper sounds like a fun mech, but I don't like the look of it. Will probably buy both with C-Bills when they arrive.

(P.S. 2 IS mech polls in a row? Clanbuster Pack incoming!!!!)

Laser Vomit only really works for the Clans because the Clan side has lasers worth the time it takes to fire them, which the Inner Sphere generally don't. The Black Knight might well be a fearsome energy boat by IS standards, but I don't see it holding up against 6E or 7E Timber Wolves. Neither will the Grasshopper, of course, but the 'Hopper has an easier time matching the Clans' mobility advantages and could frankly make just as effective an IS energy boat as the Knight, given Spheroid-side hardpoint inflation. It'd be a good match for the Summoner, if the Summoner ever started picking up its own slack.

I've always loved the Grasshopper ever since I got my first table top starter set. I am total clan but the Grasshopper has been my favorite IS mech.

Pretty sure thats an unseen, and won't ever show up unless PGI wastes a significant amount of time and money fighting Harmony Gold in a legal dispute that they may not even win.

Harmony Gold holds the IP to it. The Archer is considered an "unseen" mech for this reason.

Basically, in the old, old days, Harmony Gold got the rights to a stack of the original Robotech models (coincidentally the ones FASA swiped when making their Traveler mod (what would eventually become Battletech)). A lot of legalese later, there are certain mechs that can't be touched without incurring the wrath of HG.

These are (and I'm sure I'm forgetting a few):

Archer
Longbow
Marauder
Ostcout
Ostol
Stinger
Wasp
Phoenix Hawk

Annnnnd...a couple others that are slipping my mind at the moment.

They both suck, because they are both pure energy boats.

One head mounted missile slot means nothing.

Unless PGI is willing to fudge them to add extra hardpoints I would say neither is worth time or effort.

Black Knight's only a good idea because it could potentially look very cool.

Otherwise meh@both.

I very surprised the Grasshopper made it this far. Nothing more than a laugh my ass off mech. Look mom they issued me a Grasshopper.

I picked the Black Knight. It has a cooler name and looks cooler and ah its not named after a insect.

Though I will say the Black Knight can be sold in a Star league package at a latter date and time.
