From an economic perspective, MGs are profitable. For just 1 ton you get a heat-free, instantaneous assist vs. any mech within 240 meters.

Note: MGs fire in a cone, not a straight line; this is observable in the training grounds by watching adjacent components take damage even when you don't move your crosshairs. Depending on range some of your shots may miss because of the cone even when your crosshairs are directly on the target. For this reason MGs are basically terrible outside of knife-fighting range.

Getting into knife-fighting range is dangerous. To use MGs effectively you either need to be extremely fast (so you can get away quickly) or pushing with a group so that the necessary exposure time doesn't put you at a disadvantage. On open maps (e.g. Alpine), speed is not enough to get you in and out safely. In that case you have no option except to push with a group.

I'd like to add to what the guy above me said, hump cover like its the prom queen!

I use MG's on my Timber Wolf D builds, they make a handy part killer, but I hump cover to stay out of sight till I want to strike.

Back when I ran IS Mechs, I used to run the following, very fun, fairly effective build too. You could play around with the LPL in the RA, putting in more DHS, a larger engine, etc. You can also put in a STD 325 if you prefer. ERLL for sniping, LPL for close-in work, and the Machine Guns for crit-seeking on cored components. With the XL engine, it is very fun and (relatively) fast.

The other fun build is this, with the ERPPC for sniping, MPL for close-in work, along with the Machine Guns.

For Clan Mechs, I (occasionally) use a Dire Wolf loadout like this: MPL for direct-component, UAC20 for Assault action, MG and LBX for crit-seeking. Enjoy. (Plus you get to move your arms slightly.)
