Since Clan mech default camo sucks, I bought a new camo for my DW from MC leftover from 2013. And the Whale sure looks beastly with the Buccaneer camo. I especially love the shark grin on the CT. My enemies will sure etch that fearsome visage onto their puny hearts before dying to my awesome firepower, right? Not really, turns out.

The truth dawned on me that even before the main fight starts, if a mech grazes my CT with an ERLL from 1000 meters away JUST ONCE and cause only 1% damage, my DW's beautiful paint job is going to be replaced by ugly barnacles the whole match. Camo only looks fine at the start of the match and that's it. Since the mech will be covered with barnacles for the majority of the match, there is just no incentive to buy and equip camos in the first place for me.

Now if PGI revamp the damage taken graphic on mechs and tone down those ugly barnacles, then I might buy more camos. But not at current state.

Back in the day, we had different damage decals for different weapons. We also had a lot more detail to destroyed sections.

They were all taken out in the Quest To Have MWO Run On A Twentieth-Century Computer.

The QTHMROATCC is responsible for a lot of bad stuff that's happened to MWO.

And even in spite of the QTHMROATCC, we've gotten such fabulous things as film-grain and cockpit glass.

I say take that stuff out and put the old stuff back in.

But it will look good again at the beginning of the next match, and the one after that, and the one after that...

I like the "realism," personally. Plus, you don't see your mech during the match anyways (1st PV), so just pretend it still looks good. Or don't get hit.

True but I also like looking at them in the mechlab.

1. Just the beginning of the match is not enough for me. 90% of the match afterwards is what I care about the most.

2. Laser scoring a line of scorch mark might be realism when hit, but painting an entire section with barnacles when it just grazed me is NOT realism.

3. Don't get hit? In a Direwhale?

If you're worried about having other people not be able to see the paint job...well, I prefer to see your mech with the damage, if it makes you feel better. ;)

If i had a choice i'd probably still pick realistic battle damage over undamageable pristine armor

guess thats just a part of the game

Well that is your personal opinion and i guess you are entitled to it OP.....but i think that is silly.

You paint lasting through the battle should be the least of your worries....its not a Ferrari its a DWF! Not to mention the mech faeries fix it magically before the next match along with reloading and repairing it magically. I dont see how you thought this was important enough to post but meh, whatever. I guess silliness will beget more silliness......

Just so I'm clear on this...

It's PGI's fault your Dire-Whale gets "facially assaulted" thus rendering your pretty paint-job useless... thus you will now from henceforth forego any future purchases until PGI finds a way to keep it pretty?

Got it...

Not to point out the obvious but maybe you should avoid getting hit so much?

Methinks thou doth protest too much! :P

Best camo is to look like everyone else. Anything but green makes you a target.

My Misery looks like it's damaged all the time and no matter how much I pay my mech mechanic he won't fix all the dents and dings. :(

OP, I wouldn't worry about it. All the maps (except Crimson Strait) have such heavy colour filters that nobody can see your paint job anyway.

Last night a Raven took a pot-shot at me with his ER Large Lasers at 1000+ meters. He grazed me, dropping me from 100% down to 99%. About 10 seconds later I went into 3PV and about 1/2 my mech was covered in barnacles. I looked back up to my damage bar...yep, 99%. If I wasn't the pilot of my own mech, I would've sworn my mech had gone through an asteroid field and was a brush away from death.

I understand that damage and scaring in battle will happen and I don't care about my precious paint scheme. However, it does seem crazy that any damage, no matter how small, can make a mech look like the surface of the moon. If I had it my way, you'd get barnacles only once you took a bit more damage to a section. Or, better yet, have an intermediate texture that blackens/scars the area when it's minor damage, and then go for the barnacles once major armor damage has occured.

Even one grazing shot basically transforms a shiny mech into a pox filled abomination. How is it desirable or even realistic when my mech looks like it has gone through an asteroid shower when it still has 95% health? It simply turns me away from any camo purchases.

If I look like that after taking a lot of damage then I have no complaints. But a few missiles scratching my paint makes me look like the underside of a ship? No me gusta.
