Give it Endo and DHS, of course, swap the LRM 10 for 2 LRM 5's to free up 1 ton, and spend the free tonnage on ammo and armor. It's not great, but it can function at all ranges, which counts.

AH can do the same with 3 missile hardpoints.
(I'm not using it for that because I have the stormcrow, I'm doing the boring AC20+SRM build)

That's exactly what I'm running, though I have 3 tons of ammo each, not 4 and 2. It is not a devastating mech, but it keeps pressure on from the beginning of the match (LRM's) to the end (AC20). It also tends to get cheap, random kills with the AC20, so it's not uncommon to score low damage but get 2 kills and a win.
Not a great mech, but rather a different one.

I actually had a quite good (for me at least) match just this morning with it. Ended with 3 rounds of AC20 left and 40 LRMs:
I'm glad I put that fourth ton of AC ammo on, I ended the match by putting three rounds through a Catapult's side!

What type of SRMs to use.
How much ammo can I get.
Engine size.
XL275 and 3xsSRM2/3xSRM2/3xSRM4 + AC20 are all solid builds with varying ammounts of ammo and/or engine tweaking.

Will always run AC20/XL engine on the AH. It can't zombie anyway w/o the CT lasers

That's like a little brother to my favorite Atlas build, 2xLBX10 + 3xSRM6

Wrong. That arm is worth more for 3 ballistic points than it is for the space for one lousy AC20 (which IMO is a sub-par weapon on its tod). 3xAC/2 giving five rounds rapid strapped to a huge XL engine is terrifying to more than just other mediums, for instance.

If you must go with a STD engine, why not go for this: Ballistic Zombie?
Edit: I figured a way to cram an AMS in there even, if you can live with just a smidgen less armor and speed.

Neither one of those builds uses an AC/20. If I wanted to use a smaller autocannon I'd do it on the -A or -D.

Endo+DHS
XL275
AC10 (4 tons)
3XSRM4 (2 tons)
Run it with SRM 4 cooldown and extended AC10 range.
It is prone to ammo shortages, but that is the story with this chassis. I do like that the AC10 and module allow to engage at longer range than AC20+SRM. Rate of fire is nice. Still packs a nice punch in tight. Admittedly, while she can put up low 400s fairly consistently, I'm having trouble breaking 500 as often as I would like.

try a single uac with 3-4 tons of ammo and more srm ammo
Plink with the uac at the start of the match, when you got about 30-40 rounds left, start brawling.
I usually run my cent d like that.
