Lets see and this is mostly for reference
Board game: Flamers had the same range and damage as the small laser, it was optional rules that allowed them to add heat to the target - there were two kinds the fusion version which we are familiar with and a ammo'ed vehicle type (it was the inferno SRM's that were scary as hell)
MW2: Flamers were that ball of heat and used in solo I have killed enemy mechs with no ammo to cook off and die. Albeit heat was a little more brutal. The fire on this version did stick and add heat per second.
MW3: Don't remember hardly used if they existed at all
MW4: Don't remember hardly used them due to massive size compared to medium lasers :|
MWO: Flamers do more damage then MG's per second which honestly caught me off guard as they don't seem to do all that much damage anyways.
If your thinking of causing mechs to shut down I would insist that we get out the inferno srms with all the trappings, IE if you run to hot your inferno ammo MIGHT(it usually did) cook off on you.
