I am quite happy with the Pre-Orders I have made in this and other games. You buy a Pre-Order for what it is at the time.
Out of all Pre-Orders I have ever made, I like the one for TERA Online the most. It was literally, a Founder's Pack. It gave Closed Beta Access, Early Access on Launch, tangible Collecters Items, and ingame items (Some unique ingame items only available to the people that Pre-Ordered, too). When the game went from Pay2Play to Free2Play, they game some benifits to the people that Pre-Ordered. In the form of a "Founder's Account". Which, is a medium between the Premium Account and Free Account.

I think the problem with all pre-orders in this game is that they're always spun as:
"Hey here's some digital, intangible 3D models that you can buy for real money, don't they look great? The value is great!"
When I truly think it should be spun as:
"Hey, want to keep a legendary IP alive and kicking with a team of people who as are passionate as you are about MechWarrior? Consider picking up a _____________ Pack."
They are marketing intangible mech designs to us, when they should be marketing the life of the IP to us.
Another problem I see is that we are given NO statistics or thank you's when pre-ordering packs/ala-carte mechs. At least give us ONE statistic as to where our money is going. ie. "Hey that Clan Wave I pack you bought helped us create this new game mode!" or something.
I pre-ordered the Resistance pack because I thought it was a sensible price for 13 mechs as compared to the Clan Wave II pack, which was $40 more for the top tier, and the same amount of mechs.

Or just use keyboard and mouse, which has been the superior control scheme ever since the first MechWarrior game.
Edit: And to actually address the OP -- I've pre-ordered every package there is, and I haven't ever felt ripped off. If I would have had the extra money I would've bought a Gold Khan 'Mech too. This game has been fun since August 2012 when I was randomly invited into the Closed Beta a few days before Founder's day. And it's going to get better.
Please. The Gauss Rifle de-sync is completely Mouse-centric. It's drag and drop like files on your desktop. Made for the mouse and will never fit a Joystick. Meanwhile the best way to pilot a Mech is with a Joystick. Joystick has 4 axii, Mouse has 2, Mech has 4 axii. MechWarrior 2 prompted you to play with joystick (Sidewinder) as did every flight or MechWarrior sim up until 2004.
There is a deeper story here, but suffice to say MechWarrior was designed for the Joystick and will always give the best gameplay experiences with a joystick. The gauss de-sync is only designed for a mouse. Period, the Fat Lady sang and left the stadium a long time ago. Joe said it's so.

MW Tactics was a flop but I think that was IGPs doing. Anyway I agree MWO is in a disappointing state. Nevertheless PGI has made some recent improvements and I am willing to spend $60 to $80 every 2 years on a game. Thus I don't mind buying the Wrath pack.

Phoenix Pack was kind of iffy. I despise the Locust so that is a throw away and despite how good most people find the Shadow Hawks, I can't find any builds that work for me so that mech was a throw away as well. Battlemaster has always treated be very good though and with the quirks, the T-bolts are now pretty good as well, plus I got gobs of premium so that one was a wash.
Timber and Crow ala Carte was a wash as well. $55 a piece was too expensive but since I really didn't want to spend $210 at the time and didn't really care for the Summoner and Nova or Adder, I was kind of stuck. Kind of, sort of feel I wasted money here since I didn't get any goodies with my ala carte purchase but I did get early access and I like both mechs so yeah another wash.
Wave 2, jury is still out. Ice Ferret was a pleasant surprise and I am really enjoying mine however I do have concerns about the Mist Lynx which might end up a throw away like my Locust was. Hellbringer is promising but with the changes to BAP, it became alot less promising so it will now be up to hitboxes. Still debating on upgrading to the Gargoyle mostly because of the extra 30 days premium and swag it nets me. Getting gobs of premium time and some nice swag though either way. Might end up a wash but doubt I feel like I waste money.

Please flip this bag over so that the opening of the bag points downward.
Hold the bag directly above your head and slowly lower the opening towards yourself until the bag encompasses the front, sides, and the back of your head.
Once fitted, proceed to lower the bag and obscures your field of vison. Continue this, stopping when you feel the inside of bag touch the top of your head.
Remain still and quiet in an upright seated position while you wait for a mature adult to safely remove the bag from your head.
WARNING: For the desired effect, DO NOT alter the bag in anyway. DO NOT go about any activities while the bag is in place. DO NOT attempt to communicate with any persons while the bag is being worn if you value your dignity. DO NOT be alarmed, if you feel dehydrated, malnourished, or experiencing fake social interactions after prolonged used.

I do not like the Gauss Rifle nerf because it ruined the Phoenix mechs, for me. I saw those mechs and thought they had few Ballistic options, which is the ever-present meta in MWO, but with a Gauss Rifle they would compete okay, so I got it and 2 or 3 weeks before the release the Gauss Rifle was made into a mouse-only weapon with the drag-and-drop mechanic used for the de-sync. Go try to drag-and-drop files on your desktop with a joystick and then with a mouse in one second. Right, so it is Mouse-only in a traditional Joystick game.
So before the Gauss Rifle nerf I was buying most mechs and had 51. After, just the first Clan pack and about 4 others that do not require ballistics or can carry the multi-AC meta. The Gauss Rifle nerf is crushing to mechs that have small ballistic abilities... like all but one of the Phoenix mechs.
