I´m experiencing very strong FPS-drops when smoke occurs. It sometimes almost feel like my computer is going to go down completely. It´s not a new issue, it´s happening since about half a year.
First it only occurred on Forest Colony (around Theta-Area). Now it´s a geneal issue.

I´m always updating my nVidia drivers. Are there any official statements out there about that?

Have you tried turning your particles setting in the advanced video options to low? I know that helps me out quite a bit. Also you might want to try running the repair tool by starting the patcher and clicking the little gear symbol at the top.

I also 'solved' the problem by lowering the particle's, although it doesn't always help. The smoke also isn't the only issue, there are some other effects causing drops fps, e.g. a mass of lasers hitting close ground (notably on the desert maps) or massed ac's.

Can't understand why PGI doesn't take these issues more serious.

yup, shoot a rock point blank with lasers and watch your FPS drop. My personal favorite is firing PPC's and trying to walk backwards though the smoke. It just murders my FPS until it clears.

My favourite is with the Adder, running up and down a gully in front of the enemy, so as they can't target me, and using the flamer on the ground facing towards the enemy. Kicks up dirt and smoke, gives them something to watch while my team repositions or rains fire.

The "running hot" smoke used to cause my game to it's knees and run between 5 and 15fps. Turning particles to low seems to have "fixed" that in that particle effects now look like arse.

My current FPS killer is trying to use Thermal Vision on Viridian bog, which drops me from 30-40 to about 15-20fps

It's not just this game, people. Any game with smoke has lower FPS when that smoke is on the screen. Hell, it even happens on consoles.

Though apparently there are methods of putting smoke on the screen that don't affect performance as much (or so I've heard). I have no idea whether the implementation is difficult, or even whether what I heard is true or not.

That is not a fix, that is a workaround. Please do not excuse the atrocious lack of optimization for an issue reported years ago.

Same here, any mech where I fire & the smoke goes up past my cockpit, my FPS drops like a rock in water.

Oddly enough, smoke from other sources (farther away?) don't seem to affect me much.

My gtx 470 never had issues. My gtx 970 definitely doesn't have issues

I know old ATI cards used to have issues. Remember smoke grenades in counterstrike?

If your card can't handle fullscreen particles, turn down your particles or resolution or both

My issue is, my rig SHOULD handle it quite well. Telling players to play on "low" graphic settings, espically players with higher end rigs is just down right ridiculous.

I would really love this fixed seeing how my gtx 780 gaming rig can play most other games at 90fps even with combat nonsense going on.

This effects everybody
I run 2x gtx 580 and i get 300fps in battlefield 3 (about 150+ in bf4)
I struggle to stay above 60 in mwo

Its gotten way better since the sli fix
But its still stupidity bad
Laser hit effects almost bring my machine to its knees when i use more than 4 at once at under 400m

I cannot imagine how this would be for a min spec player

No, that's a CPU bottleneck. OP is talking about full screen sprites. Claiming your machine "should" handle it but not mentioning specs isn't helpful at all.

I have this problem too. Fps drops from 75+ to slideshow levels. But this problem persists on dx11 only. I solved it via switching to dx9, cuz dx11 gives neither performance improvements, promised by microsoft, nor graphics quality improvement. The only problem - thermal vision green smoke bug, that appeared, when dx11 was implemented and still not fixed.

a patch in March or May or so introduced this slowdown, its probably more a Bug somewhere
because the same effects last year caused no slowdowns
Steam from overheating gets my system down from 55-70 fps to 5 or so

last hint
playing Far Cry 4 everything at ultra, even some mild AA (though I have yet to update to 1.04; with the nice Fur simulation thingy I think) and getting the same 50 ish fps in heavy action than in MWO

only solution: turning Particles down, but alas it looks worse

one sidenote:
before a drive went all belly up, I had windows 10 running and that fixed for some reason the Particles issue
but then I can also say that a fresh Windows 7 64-bit install has problems with particles

maybe once I'm more in the mood I'll give it another try

This occures also on my rig. Got a MSI GTX580 Extreme Lightning 3GB. Massive fps drops with particles. Another proof how terrible the architecture is of this game. PLEASE FIX! This is already taken so long time. Waiting for atleast 1 year for this fix.

Hi all,
here my specs:
i7-3770k
16gb RAM
GTX660Ti

I bought that Rig after closed beta ;) So I spent very much on MWO, cause I don´t play any other games. And I don´t think, that my rig is really outdated.
