If you play PUG you get each round a random team of 12 players unable to communicate.
If you play in a small group, the matchmaker will set you up with other small groups against big group what is able to communicate via VOIP and you get stomped.
The best way to improve MWO would be to give the players tools to communicate (VOIP) and to not shuffle the PUG group every round.
But to be honest, nobody wants VOIP and most MWO players don't want to play a game where teamwork is important.
So skip the teamwork part from the game.
Remove spotting and targetting and remove the minimap.
Introduce a deathmatch mode.
Remove heat as game mechanic, and add regenerating shield to the mechs.

Shields? No heat? I am sorry but have you ever played another Battletech or Mechwarrior game before? This is neither helpful nor useful for anyone in this game.... waste of forum space.

The game might be flawed in many ways, but at its core I don't think it sucks.

Wrong.

Remove spotting and targetting and remove the minimap.
Stupid.

I can only imagine what a mess it would be to balance the game with a true deathmatch mode.

No.
You might like Hawken more if you don't like heat and want to be able to regenerate health, honestly I actually thought it was decent when I played a little bit of it, but last time I played their business model turned me away.

Every mode is team deathmatch, there is a difference.

Seriously, you have absolutely no clue what this game is about, or what the people who play it want. The -only- part of your post that has even a smidgen of merit is the point about in-game VOIP. Other than that, you pretty much missed the boat on everything.
Try again.

Personally, I find the game these days, one of the best out there. Why? It can't be beat. You can't win at this game! Sure, you may win a few matches. Things may be good and fun for a few days, but the inevitable losing streak will be right around the corner. That feeling of defeat is just a sign to come back another day. Another thing about this game. Every drop has a new set of variables and rarely do you play with the same people twice. There is no other game in the entirety of my life that I have played consistently for as long as I have played Mechwarrior.
VOIP? Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea how annoying that would be? If you want to communicate with your team mates then join a team and drop with them. The last thing I want in a drop is to have to listen to a bunch of pre-pubescent or over the hill die hards screaming at their pugs through my headphones.
If you cant hack it don't play it..

Also, paint schemes should change how our mechs behave. Red mechs should go faster. Black should be harder to detect with scanners. White mechs should give bonuses to any friendlies rallying around them. Yellow mechs should get a 30% speed boost when running away from the enemy. Green mechs should have an acidic DOT added to all their attacks. Orange mechs have a fire aura.
Edit: and if Wispsy claims your life, you die for real.

9/10 good troll sir. Would be 10/10 but you forgot to add a page of maths about why shields are awesome and a rant about how if you had shields you wouldn't have gotten killed last match by those cheaters with their VOIP hax and their teamworks.

So you want just another call of duty-game?
Just search call of duty on steam/playstation-store and start playing. This is Mechwarrior.
