That's the exact opposite of how ELO should be working. Since it's designed for chess, you wouldn't have a system that pits random scrubs against friggin Grandmasters.

Low ELO should = teams full of other low ELO players, and a high ELO should = teams of high ELO players.

Unfortunately they balance it by the team's total so it is very possible and common for a team of roughly equivalent players to go up against a team that is top and bottom heavy since the team's totals are similar.

I can really see a difference when it gets late and the population shrinks and this becomes more likely. During "peak" hours it seems the teams are much more evenly matched and I can consistently do ok, but not great. If I stay on very late though it gets very hit or miss--I can get on stretches of total domination (invidual, not team) because of poor competition or frequently get stomped because the team is just full of horrible players. Late last night I was on a match on caustic where eventually I just suicided. After 6 minutes of both teams just camping out clustered together on opposite sides of the caldera too scared to even move with literally no kind of action, peeking, or anything despite my pleas for someone to move I just rushed the whole enemy team and got it over with.

with a few more matches under my belt I did manage to pull of one hell of a flank in my 4x ac5 Zoidberg. 2 KC's a stormcrow and some other poor medium that was just a red triangle through the Viridian Bog.

Is it me or did whoever designed Viridian bog just flat out hate assault mechs?

No all the maps are poorly designed.
Total offscale.
Most of the maps sucks....

The angle you have to make to see the centre of therma for example is stupidly high.

Assaults are either small penis compensators or fielded by players who think this is Mechwarrior 2/3/4 and the goal is to get the biggest mech. I cringe when the team roster comes up and there are 3 D-wolves dropping.

Err... what?

In Mechwarrior 2: Mercs, online at least, the goal of the best players was to constantly try and drop their weight and still maintain their ability to win.

When it started online, lots drove 95-100 tonners. A year into it the best pilots were running 60 - 70 tonners with the 65 ton Hellbringer and the 70 ton Summoner being the most popular.

I don't know what ELO you're playing at, but by my estimation it should be around 100... or less. I've never once seen a player doing that in an Assault, and I've been playing for a long while.

But, I have seen teams up and abandon what would have been a successful push, leaving Assaults out to dry. That's a pretty valid reason for "crying in chat" IMO, and it's the cause of a majority of Assaults "crying in chat" anyway.

Sometimes the team sees things differently from the assault pilot.

The way the matchmaking works is even if your ELO is super high you can end up with scrubs on your team. In fact, the higher your ELO is the more likely you will have clueless noobs on your team to carry.

That isn't how Elo works. It doesn't grab random players then try to average out the teams. It grabs players as close in Elo as it can to the player who 'started' the match. It only reaches out if no players are available. There is not as large an Elo difference in a match as you think.

People 'getting bored', or not liking the map or team composition ("What no ECM?!?") and suiciding is probably pretty common, and accounts for a lot of the 'my team sucks' threads.
