(edit August 2015 - below posts are pings to North America server. Unless new replies are added then it's something else)

Hi fellow Mechwarriors, especially Hong Kong, (edit May2015 thank you for adding other countries)

What are your PING? which ISP are you using? what is your tracert results?

Mine is 243ms pretty constant, no fluctuations, HKBN 100mbps LAN. But get around 15% game LAG crazy can't play, die without knowing why. Around 50% good play - happy. Around 35% bearable lag, just play and pray don't die without knowing. (edit new findings explained below CPU_GHOST_LOAD_100% cause low fps)

Does anyone know how to shorten it? It be BLISS if it could drop under 100ms. i.e. 1/10th of a reaction is highly reasonable don't you think? plus peripheral response delay all in 200ms ??? 1/5th of a human delay reaction is still acceptable I think .....

Its not the lag. Its the low polling rate of the servers to the client. Theoritically, if your client is being refreshed only 100ms, then if you have a ping of 200ms, you can be experiencing effective lag rates as high as 300ms. In addition to that, there has been desyncing issues with the client-server (the mechs would moonwalk) that also affects your actual position in the game (you think you are in a safe spot but you are actually off from your real position, and you get killed instead). You think you are hitting a mech, but the target mech has actually moved to a different spot. The desync also affects your hit registration, so you are not registering actual hits.

I am playing two other games, and currently MWO has the worst network performance of the three. Despite many promising advances in the game, I am considering dropping MWO should poor netcode and net performance persist. PGI can increase the polling rate but it doesn't seem to me that they are willing to invest for new server capacity needed for this despite the business being given to them.

I see, thanks Anjian, especially for introducing some proper terminology.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Extra updates,,,,,my top posts has some error. I need to provide a correction now.

Most LAG is probably NOT. It is the graphics card unable to keep up, i.e. dropping below 10fps. (edit later found out CPU_GHOST_LOAD_100%) Now monitoring FPS all the time, didn't triple confirm before making top post, sorry MWO.

In the beginning checked a few times, with VERY HIGH graphics settings, average 30+++ fps. Even getting 40+++ fps a lot of times, with occasional happy 60+fps. Hence I thought no problem here. But recently recheck and found on certain times/maps??? it burdens the GPU so much even on ALL LOW settings, fps around 10fps+/- :(. (edit Because CPU_GHOST_LOAD_100%)

Hardware is
MSI Lightning-II Radeon 5870 OC 1Ghz 1.35V (still get below 10fps on ALL LOW graphics on certain maps, certain times) GPU load 99% and ram 900++MB all maxed out, overloaded, burdened. regardless VERY HIGH or LOW graphics. Temperature never above 70C.
AMD CPU 965 3.4Ghz black edition
8GB DDR3-1600
SSD OS+MWO on 64bits

OSD monitoring shows CPU load between 25% to 50% - very comfortable.
Ram usage max seen 4.5GB physical, Pagefile top seen 6.5GB.

Oh last report, with ALL LOW graphics setting, I experience around 10% of the time unplayable 10fps. These times realizing not LAG, just gave up literally because walking into walls, turning late, and hitting friendlies :(, sorry guys & gals. Around 50% of the times 20+fps, around 40% of the times 30+fps. Even on VERY HIGH graphics. It's puzzling.

Heavy Brawling, Heavy graphics, explosions, effects, etc, such events are short and momentariliy will burden GPU down 10fps is understandable and not used for above report. On the LOW graphics settings getting 10fps is sometimes (10%) not much/without mechs infront, no fire fights effects etc. Sometimes just launched into game and get 10fps. Random maps.

I'm not familiar with AMD cpu. Your GPU, on the other hand, looks "old", about 3 odd years i guess? You might need a better card, and a bigger PSU if your current one is insufficient for your "future" GPU.

Take a look around HK based websites to get prices and ask here (new player help or hardware sections), some of us might be able to advise.

I use a GTX 670. Might not be the best, but i get good performance from it.

You're absolutely RIGHT!,5870 is now 5 years old technology from release year. As for PSU I'm good 750w with a 125w CPU and nothing extraneous like 10HDD or whatever.

I'm waiting for the next R9_390X or R10 or whatever it is to be named. If I can resist the temptation from what's available now R9_290 HK$2.4k R9_290X HK$3.09k both Sapphire Tri-X. Was also pondering of crossfire two 290 default PCB @ H$2k each. The inefficient power consumption is discouraging me, high electricity bills. AMD 2015 GPU 20nm please come out quick.

On the network problem/disconnection issue, I just tried TCPoptimizer from speedtguide and it is worst now I think. But I'm really not sure.

Cause I also suspect Cisco RV180W is bad for online games. CoD AW also faces much problems private match within HK only of 2 players.

I've run MWO on a 955 CPU and a 5830. Upgrading to a 270x had a net gain of 0 fps improvement in MWO with that cpu. I would bet a ton of money that with that old phenom2 he is basically tapped out with it. ( MWO and the shown cpu load is misleading you, check the hardware forums for lengthy discussion on MWO and CPU usage)

In other games it'll be a different story, a gpu upgrade will likely give some fps boost there.

I'm in China now, from a family restaurant with free PC internet usage, probably on simple low bandwidth family type ADSL service, simply trying the ping and tracert from a small little town named Chang_An, of City Dongguan of Province Guang_Dong.

Large ping times do affect performance, but not the fps. Fps is affected more by hardware. It would seem that you might need to consider upgrading your cpu and gpu. Check to see if you can get something good but within your budget. If you can get it/them with a discount, that's even better.

I upgraded to R9 290 HIS ice Q something. Improvements everywhere, some times 110fps. Still on my 965 cpu default. Nothing overclocked.

I also discovered graphics RAM usage max out 1.8Gb, very high settings MSAA. My old card only had 1Gb.

Also my previous problem of experience 10fps even at low settings is memory leak problem. Graphic RAM usage was some 600Mb, would jump to 999Mb. Had to logout, relogin to solve.

Now this Cybercafe does not have MWO installed, and normally all USB ports are physically not accessible, shut, denied, etc. Luckily, this Cybercafe has a USB port, but only 2.0 black, regardless,

1) plug in a external harddisk casing with SSD_OCZ inside.
2) then install MechWarriorOnlineInstaller.exe and CUSTOM pointing to the "already installed inside SSD" drive letter, G:\ in my case.
3) install is completed immediately :( under one min.
4) install vcredist_x64.exe so that MWO can run in 64bit environment/mode.
5) Launch and play.
  • But not yet, because of my laziness to use an outdated install from March,
  • and fooled MWO client unable to recognized a lot of *.paks
  • hence game launch without proper shader(if I'm using the right word)
  • plus NO HUD heads up display, NO words, does NOT show teammates and opponents and ping, does NOT show end results.
  • Tonight try again with a patch REPAIRED all hash checked OK.
  • Wish me luck.
Btw game launch into lobby/mechlab through USB 2.0 port was acceptably fast, around 40seconds +/-15seconds, surprisingly. Game launch DROP to play is standard fast/slow search.

Thanks for sharing, can you please show us your tracert? I would like to show it to my telco = HKBN and ask them to try to improve their route. Thanks again in advance.

You're great there 200ms ping, 17% better than Hong Kong, it must be a better gaming experience altogether. Happy for you.

I would suggest you try using Pingzapper. I live in Beijing and it reduces my ping from 290-300 to around 250.
It also has a server located in Hong Kong so you may experience a better ping reduction than I have.
Also I think you won't be able to reduce your ping to 100ish , the physical distance from both sides of the Pacific is just too much :)

Edit:typo

I am playing from Malaysia, on the same time zone as Hong Kong.
Local ISP is Telekom Malaysia, on their Unifi 10MB package.
My Ping is between 230 to 280, it can get worst during weekend afternoon, spiking at 500+ Ping.

On the hardware side; I previously run MWO on Sapphire Radeon HD 6850 1GB for the past 3 years.
Since the last performance update, I get between 40 to 50 FPS in PUG and around 30 FPS in CW, 1440x900 resolution with all medium settings.

Burned my card last month due to power surge in the house, and have change to an Asus R9 270x directCU II Top, a little dated but I am not planning to spend too much money on my 6 year old PC.
Anyway, now the game average at 50 to 70 FPS in PUG, but see very little improvement in CW, about 35~40 FPS, 1440x900 resolution with mostly high settings and few at medium.
