IIRC, someone was suggesting your K/D needed to be this tall to even consider playing. It was in positive, whole, numbers …

The rest of us can only hope the PuG, and normal group, ques are no-longer plagued by Release Valves, now that they can play for C-bills somewhere else.

No you are not dead in seconds, and nor is it an elitist thing. Tons of fun and requires strategy rather than meta....

I actually was just on Turtle Bay, and several things struck me... the units were totally mixed, from all houses... so I assumed it must have been against a clan attacker... but again, there was no opposing force and it stated we were "counter attacking" which literally I guess was just recapturing the installation, that had no defending mechs, since no real players were choosing to be there against us.
I even disconnected through the usual client crash on entering match and when I was rejoining, before I hit the rejoin button, even though my whole team was now in match and "rejoin" was still an option, it was flashing the DEFEND Turtle Bay rally, I guess to try to get some enemy mechs into the fight.
My best guess, the enemy had 2 wins on there, but had no staying power, gave up trying to conquer the place but the system feels the "need" to make you counter attack to take away those two wins, so that a given system is no longer in contention. So if you really want a planet, you as a team have to attack it what... seven times or more in a row, to fully have it and not offer the enemy the chance to take it back while the rest of your team is offline... even then the ebb and flow means probably it will be taken back ALSO with no opposition, if the game lets you attack and no defenders ever rally.

But, it isn't some comp team, bigoted, narcissistic, doof infested wasteland like some people wanted to make it out to be. There are plenty of regular joes putting in the work to take the gates down and secure victories for their faction, and you can do the same. I do recommend, however, that you stick to solo queue until you have a good handful of times in your recent memory that you've carried the team and been top dog on the battlefield. You'll need the skills to do well in a given situation because you can't practice on these new maps, and matches don't whiz by to try new strategies. Also, there will be times when everybody derps on your team. Nature of the beast, just gotta try and motivate them.
But lastly, it is about having fun with it. I've had about 4 extremely good games, 2 wins, 2 losses. They were the best games I've ever played in MWO. And I'm nowhere near that good of a player, so if I can do it, so can you. We need you on the front if you can hold your own weight. So don't be afraid, just jump in.
