I am really tired of this Timeline restriction on mechs. I mean if it keeps up unless we do a significant timeline jump a few favorite mechs won't be released ever.

The King Crab actually survived in small numbers all the way into the Third Succession War- and that's just the original (if downgraded) chassis, not the downteched version that went into production in the late 2800's by GM. It never suffered the fate of the Coyotl- first put out of production, then divested of spare parts, and finally phased out in the waning years of the Golden Century and scrapped in favor of more modern designs. The Clans are far more cruel to older designs than the Inner Sphere.

There are still a LOT of mechs left, and once we have reached Terra, we can always jump a few years and get TONS of new mechs.

why does the Atlas II have a Rotary Autocannon? Speaking of which, why is the Atlas III so horrible? I mean why put a rAC/2 on an 100 ton assault mech?

edit: also Streak LRM20? Streak-6? 4 MXPLs? Whoever made that needs to have their head examined.

If you're going to go with a bunch of stupid tech for an Atlas, go with a Heavy Gauss Rifle. For the missiles go with an MML9. Not as many LRMs as most Atlases have, but it saves enough tonnage to mount a pair of PPCs, one in each arm.

In close the MML9 also provides the SRMs and if anything gets into the min range for the Gauss & the PPCs add in a pair of MPLs...and don't forget your fists.

Standard 300, 19 tons of armour, CASE in both torsos, 3t for the Gauss, 2t of SRMs, 1t of LRMs, 12 DHS.

That's an Atlas.

I still want a Cougar. Don't care, it is one of my favorite mechs.

You can almost do it with an Adder, I run my Prime in a Cougar prime mode, all I really had to do, was down grade the twin LRM 10's to 5's and she works well. Not stupid numbers like 1000 DMG matches, but a couple hundred, more if you go unnoticed.

It's not the loadout as much as the look and design. I just like how sleek it looks :)

I first saw it in Mechcommander. I have liked the mech ever since.

Indeed, it is one of the most good looking early Clan mechs.

My only fear is how they would handle the laser arms. After what they did with the Mad Dog (making them stubby), I'm not sure how that would look on the cougar.

Never bothered me much. I always seen them deployed though (like the picture on Sarna).

On that note...
We should really have different models for lasers, it does bother me slightly.

This would be as simple as adding a barrel, like in the older models.
A larger, longer barrel for Large Lasers (say, 50% the size of a PPC in width and slightly shorter?), scaling down to half the length and width for the Small Laser.
All ER variants should be roughly 10% longer than the non-ER version (same for PPCs).
Pulse versions should be maybe half the length of the non-pulse versions, but otherwise the same dimensions.
Each lasers lense should also match the colour of the beam.

This cannot be difficult at all.
I could go and make a set of 13, suitably detailed, ready to go scaled cylinders with different coloured lenses and a square base inside of an hour.

From there, how long would it really take them to update the assets in game?

Really at the end of the day, they should only really need 1-2 models of each weapon, and have a standardised size across everything, only needing to model unique mounting plates for a chasis for the difference between small / large weapons.

what does the Atlas II have to do with 3052? (it was an exclusive SLDF Royals mech and extinct outside of whatever the clans have stored)

It was extinct in IS, but the Clans brought some with them.

Lasers don't vary in size by power as much as you'd think, and don't have colored lenses.

Oh I know that.
But in BT, and in prior models in MWO pre standardisation, they had barrels, and it looked good.

The lenses don't need to be coloured, but it does help with differentiating the weapons a little.
I'd be fine with hollow barrels too.

Actually got bored and did them up.
Took 25 minutes, then another 15-20 messing about with colours and arranging for the render.

However, the thing is that lasers don't need barrels in the same manner as firearms, and having the long barrels shown in the original BT art would actually be more of a detriment than a boon from a design standpoint.

There is a reason why real-world laser weapons look more like stubby telescopes than WWII naval guns or MBT cannons. ;)

Oh I know.
But Battletech isn't really set in 'real physics', it's from a time before that, and the aesthetic and physics of the universe are set, as wierd as some of them are.

One of those is barrels on the lasers. :P
