It does lack the LAA, though Bishop's rendition (especially on the larger version of the picture) does look more like the weapon arm is attached in a way that largely, if not completely, prevents lateral tracking separately from the torso.

Now, if one really wanted to nit-pick: RS3039U indicates (on pg. 179 of 500 of the PDF version) that the CDA-3C (the same Cicada variant that is "supposed to" have the MGs in the legs :() has LAAs and Hand Actuators in both arms...

wait....*GASP*

an error in the record sheets?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Hand and arm actuators where they don't belong (like the on the RFL-3N rifleman on the originals). They must have them. After all, they are the definitive reason why my KGC cannot be allowed to happen! :D

And most official Cicada art has a laser in each arm. The poor Cicada has one of the worst record sheet to art accuracy track records of any 'Mech. :D

RS3039U is fairly new (published by CGL in Dec. 2010), and (IMO) should be expected to be more-carefully checked and more error-free than the early RSs (see also, the ON1-K's SRM launcher and the "is it in the arm or the torso" issue).

In the case of disagreements between RS layout and visual depiction, PGI has previously tended to lean toward the former (see: the MWO Dragon actually having a LAA despite all of the art showing an LAA-less cannon-arm, and the MWO ON1-K's SRM launcher being in the torso rather than the arm).
Then again, both RS3025/3026 (pgs. 136-138 of 218) and RS3039U (pgs. 217 & 218 of 500) shows both the DRG-1N and the DRG-1C as lacking the left-hand Hand Actuators that the MWO renditions have...
(Besides, don't the BT record sheets necessarily take precedence over the BT artwork, anyway - which would necessarily mean that the record sheets cannot be "in error" versus the artwork?)

(Also, RS3025/3026 doesn't show any of the RFL-3C, RFL-3N, or RFL-4D as having Hand Actuators, though it shows only the RFL-3N having LAAs.)

Still, the point I was going for was that I think it would be interesting/funny to see the art pass for the CDA-3C to see it gain some Commando or Spider arms tacked-onto those panels... ^_^

(Also, note that I'm not taking the bait in that last sentence... :()

According to the last ATD, the next light hero mech will be released in Spring. It looks like it's the Flea. (or Firestarter or UrbanMech?)

So I believe they will, instead of doing all the Founder's mechs first, make heroes for the heavier chassis (eyes on the $). That said, in December it will be... Quickdraw?

Yep, thats what i thought too when i did read it.
Quickdraw in December.
Hunchback, Trebuchet and Blackjack in January,February and March.
And then in April they start with the light heroes.

Next Light Mech sighting?

(yeah, it's rough, just more a proof of concept than anything. If it gets traction, I might do a "proper" one. Those lines looked a lot better when it was only 2 inches tall!)

Oh ****, I hope not. Not much left that PGI could do for a Hero Spider but raise the engine size. HSR is still off giving them a slight edge for good pilots. The bad ones have just been QQing and committing suicide as they decide "I can tank a whole team in a 35ton mech" causing me and others to lmao.

P.S. On a side note; I wonder if PGI could give us a module that allows heavy and assault mechs to step on Spiders when they get within 5 meters? They could have it with a little animation showing the mech stepping on them and then grinding them into the ground

Good guess.
Any clues about a notorious Quickdraw?

Well, technically, that's a Venom, the Spider's 35 ton, bigger kid brother. Same speed and maneuverability, same size, better armor and 4 medium pulse lasers.

I am still betting on the Hunchy for December. It'll definitely outsell any Quickdraw, if $$$ is the concern. I think they learned from the Golden Boy SNAFU that just slapping "Hero" on something doesn't mean people want it. (Death Knell and Fang were both bad, but the GB redefined poor planning)

Makes sense but would obsolete the Spider. Also weird design that they used, different name with a few more tons but same "SDR" designation

It's essentially a "Spider II" much like the JagerMech was originally called a Rifleman II. Or a IIC Clan Mech. Based off, related, but not the same as, sort of thing.

Personally, I would doubt that the Venom itself would be seen in-game anytime soon, due to lack of variant availability - there is only one variant available until 3056, and the third variant isn't available until 3057.

However, it should be possible to shoehorn an approximation into a normal-weight Spider design, such that it could be used as a Hero 'Mech.
  • Chassis: Endo-Steel
  • Engine: STD 180 (base max speed of 97 kph)
  • Jump Jets: x6 (LT, RT, x2 CT, LL, RL)
  • Armor: Ferro-Fibrous (5.5 tons, 194 armor points (92% of maximum))
  • Heat Sinks: x10 DHS (7 in engine, x2 LT, x1 RT)
  • Weapons: x4 MPLas (x2 LT, x2 RT)
(All tonnage and criticals used; tested in RemLab.)

There are also a couple of Hero characters in TRO 3039 to which such a 'Mech could be attributed: Gwndolyn Snedicor (151st Dark Horse regiment of the Eridani Light Horse) and Rhonda Stillston (recon company in the Addicks Draconis March Militia).

Though, one issue with this is that it still necessarily (as a result of needing a minimum of 4 total energy hardpoints, with two allocated to each side-torso) has the ability to match (or, more to the point, exceed) any loadout possible for either the SDR-5D and SDR-5V, and arguably-more potential firepower than the SDR-5K - any or all of which is likely (especially with as much hatred and loathing as the Spider already generates) to set off the "P2W!!!" crowd. :)

Thoughts?

don't the break out the pitchforks and cry "P2W" after every hero mech announcement? (And even early release MC versions of normal mechs, for that matter)?

Also, for the record, I don't actually really care for the mech either way, it's more to tease those people who keep wanting the Venom added as a "Hero Spider" despite actually being 2 different mechs.

Well, I don't do the "P2W!!!" thing, and I assume you don't... but, not everyone is so reasonable. :)
Though, your tease does lead into a potentially interesting discussion of what the eventual Hero Spider might be like...

Missile/laser combo (like the X-5 versus the other CDAs), or ballistic/missile combo (just to be near-maximally different)? :)
