I have no inside info, and MonkeyDCecil already listed the available variants plus the 3L (which isn't supposed to be available until 3051, versus the game being (re)set to 3049).

So, my guess would be the VND-1R (the basic energy/missile variant), the VND-1X (the ballistic-equipped variant), the VND-1AA ("the fast one"), with the Hero 'Mech probably being either the St. Ives' Blues (piloted by Michael Jones, from TRO 3025 & TRO 3039) or Chuong Vong's modified "VND-1R (Vong)" (from TRO 3039).
The VND-1SIC could also be an available common variant, if the St. Ives' Blues isn't chosen as the Hero 'Mech.

Vong is the most minor of hardpoint changes though, unless it had some serious hardpoint inflation I'd doubt it'd be a hero.

Hero variants are much less about hardpoints, and much more about "cool". Many Hero variants are very similar in hardpoints to at least one standard variant.

Well, there is another option if PGI wants to retain some grounding in BT canon: make up a loadout for the unnamed, undetailed VND belonging to Chad Jackson, the third notable VND pilot (after Jones & Vong) listed in TRO 3039.

Totally forgot about the third option for Kali Liao's dad, having Romano's favour would definitely allow him to have a non-standard and LosTech using config.

As much as I am a Davion and therefore NOT a Liao, the Hero Vindi should be Liao to the core. I'm not sure if Liao has a Hero variant yet anyways. The Vindi is a Liao mech through and through.

Technically, Grigori Kovalenko (the pilot of Ilya Muromets) is CapCon-aligned.
However, Kovalenko is not a canonical BT character.

Of the IS factions, the CapCon, DracCom, and FRR are without BT canon-based Hero 'Mechs.
Though, the CapCon has Grigori Kovalenko (Ilya Muromets), the DracCom has Donald & Martin Takeda (Fang and Flame), and the FRR has Odin Sigurd (Huginn) - all wholly-original creations of PGI - to represent them.

If the Panther ever arrives I demand a Katana Kat hero mech! The personal mech of Minobu Tetsuhara, the protagonist of the Wolves on the Border novel and the man who founded and trained the Ryuken regiments of the Draconis Combine. Later used by Minobu's younger brother, Fuhito Tetsuhara.

Fun Fact considering the incoming Vindicator: Minobu Tetsuhara piloted a Vindicator after the Katana Kat (and a Dragon later still, up until his last battle).

That Vindicator looks pretty darn nice IMO. Close enough to the original to be recognizable as a Vindicator, but actually functional looking. Good job by Alex. You know, that right PPC arm is looking almost Warhammerish. Oh, if only PGI could go there without invoking the wrath of lawyers.
