The Guillotine would be competing against one other 70-ton 'Mech (Thunderbolt).

Sorry Strum, but the Thunderbolt isn't a 70 ton mech!

Indeed. And he missed the Cataphract (which is 70 tons).

Yeah - that was supposed to be the Cataphract... :)

Me too.
But then I think about the Banshee and the Cyclops and change my mind.

Bishop Steiner's list of available Assault Mechs (listed in descending order of "DO-WANT")
Annihilator (Dragoon only, very rare, so ain't gonna happen, sadly)
Cyclops (with Info Warfare and proper use of the module system, could be a very interesting design)
Mauler (great hardpoints, but low torso mount keeps quad dakka from easy sniper abuse. Insufficient variants)
Devastator (like the Mauler, great hardpoints, but not enough variants)
King Crab (unique shape, heavy dakka balanced by maneuverability and arm motion limitations)
Longbow (Would give a nice missile boat chassis, but is very limited)
Banshee (A lite Altas with better speed potential)
Zeus (Iconic, but not very exciting. Orion, Cyclops, Banshee and Atlas can all pretty much do everything it can)
Thug (Again, limited in variety, but a solid light brawling Assault, could do what the Awesome never has)
Imp (Effective, and unique visually, but again, Dragoons only)
Hatamoto (Silly samurai knockoff of the Thug. Rather have the Thug)
Charger (............... just because it CAN have a 400 doesn't make it a good idea)
Shogun (MEH.... just MEH)
Marauder II (Unseen, and TBH, boring. Also no variants and, oh... um. Unseen, Macorss style)

The remaining mechs are either extinct, or so rare as be so considered (such as the Crockett, which is used, renamed "Katana" by the DCMS thanks to Comstar, but they cannot build or replace them) such.

Sadly, only the King Crab and Marauder II at this time really breaks the "boring humanoid" pattern.

so real world, between the lack of 95 tonners, and it's overall usefulness, even though I don't really care for it, the Banshee would be the most useful/logical next Assault.

But I would much prefer a lot of other designs over it.

***It is possible i have missed some, but more likely, I have left them out for a reason.

Banshee ok..... i even could arrange myself with the Banshee. Even if its just for the 95t gap.
But why on Earth would someone want the Cyclops?
Nobody can even say how the Command Console will work. Other than that its just a lighter and plain ugly Atlas :| or not?

The Longbow is also "Unseen, Macross style" (based on the SDR-04-Mk XII Phalanx Space Defense Destroid).

As PGI seems to be avoiding implementing SLDF Royals variants (which are distinguished by having a lower-case "b" at the end of the designation - e.g. THG-11Eb, KTO-19b, STK-3Fb, LCT-1Vb, TDR-5Sb, and so on), the Thug would not have enough variants (the third "common" variant isn't available until 3067, and requires a C3i Computer).

Because it is ugly as hell. And the uglier they are, the best Alex Iglesias draws them. (OK, except for the Quickdraw, which was uninspired).

And because if one Assault should have ECM, it should be the Cyclops.

But I would take a Zeus instead of the Cyclops, no problem. I'm quite sympathetic with my Steiner friends (and enemies) - they should have their flag-mech.

and way easier to make non macross looking without losing the flavor of the mech. As seen in MW4, Project Phoenix, my own stuff.

Also, of interest might be NGNG Podcast #84, between the 7:40 and 9:30 marks - Garth essentially confirms that there will be time-jumps in the timeline (and that said time-jumps would affect 'Mech availability, and that he didn't know when those would happen as of the point when the podcast was recorded).

I think they have quite a lot of time for time-jumps if there are still 16 omni-mechs from 1st wave of Clan invasion which is 8 months if they will keep 2 mechs/month after launch.

I actually think they will do a Clan/IS mix. Abandoning the IS would not be healthy for the game.

You got a point there, but there aren't many good IS mechs left - in terms of number of variants, availability, role and distinguish looks. Too many homogeneous variants and humanoid mechs...
