Between 1st and 3rd person view arguing all of sudden the "2nd person view" seems a good compromise. :D

@Diardrageth - It's just the poptarters from 4 who don't know any other way to play. Personally I vote for 4th person.

There are things that can be done in options when creating a game to give the stability of 3rd person viewing while limiting the view to first person. For example...take out the cockpit framework or ghost it. yes this causes a minor advantage since you do not have the blind spots. or you could allow the 3rd person view but only allow the game to render what can be seen from the cockpit so if you are hiding just around the corner in a huge heavy mech it wont be rendered because the pilot is behind the building. thus allowing them to see all the cool stuff but they cant actualy see you and how you are positioned or where exactly you are standing. making the 3rd person drone where there are counter measures againstit....the list goes on and on.

but yes for me it is first person all the way I hate 3rd person due to the fact I cant aim and I run in to everything.

I have not problem with taking out the "Fluff" like the cockpit graphics, and letting those be modified how a player see fit. but the main point is that it has to be a same for everyone.

The Devs will pick how they want it done, and everyone plays by those rules.

The majority of people posting in this thread appear to prefer first person view...but that's not everyone. If more people will play and enjoy this game with 3rd person view added then it SHOULD be included. There are countless ways to observe and spot mechs in this game over and around all obstacle and structures. (UAV, satellite scan, that magnetic imaging thing etc). With these kinds of tools fears of Ambushes and Jump Snipers are laughable. If that's not enough to let you sleep at night your being selfish. My laser cant bend around corners any more then yours can....

I think we can all agree battle mechs are fun to pilot and we love to play these games. We want it to be fun and competitive, so everyone has an equal chance to win. But some people love to also look at the mechs in all their glory. Smashing around in that custom paint job, that's why we spend all that time looking at and playing with colours and emblems....and MONEY if they have any hopes of selling players camo patterns or emblems.

I am sure there are several ways 3rd person could be included that does not affect overall game play. Maybe an idea like the one above. But lets say for some strange reason nothing can be done to limit the added view around corners and objects, then so be it. We can all use it, and that's fair enough for me.

I'm good with 3rd person, too, but when a player in 3rd person gets hit with a ton of damage thier targeting reticle should go away for a few seconds, just like when someone who gets hit with a ton of damage in 1st person does with thier upper torso rocking back and forth. If a 1st person POV suffers in game effects the 3rd person POV play should suffer the same effects, but most of the 3rd person POV honks don't see it that way. Don't give me the motion sickness BS... becuase it is just that BS an excuse. If a computer montier gives you motion sickness then stay away from any and all TV's and computer montiers or keep a barf bucket close.

Let's not forget that the cockpit adds yet another point of differentiation and balance into the mix. Different 'mechs w/ different dashboards. Betcha that Dragon will have a right-spiffy FOV, and ditto for the Catapult.

FFP

If you add in a thrid person option, you might as well advertise this as third person mech game. The advatage of TP is too great. However, it looks like you are marketing this as a sim game to distinguish it from the mob of action mech games that have been released in the near past.

Don't buckle, stay the course. Keep FFP. Sorry guys with motion sickness :\ Maybe they'll make it so the cockpit motion is not so .... sickening

I'm fine with first person, but a third person view is helpful sometimes so I would want both.

If they had to cave, then 3rd person view with no Reticule and your weapons arrays go Grey and stay that way. Admire your ride if you want, but you had best stay off of the battlefield. ;)

That still wouldn't work. You simply go third person to "scout" over a hill or obstacle, then switch back to first to go into combat. There is a reason why there are FFP servers and no FTP servers

There can be no compromise here. Its either a first person or third person....the two can not exist together.

Gods, I've been away from mwmercs.com for a while.. I'm more active over on Mektek.net, regardless, First Person only. For people that want to review matches or see the mechs from the outisde, why not have a 'theater' mode that's becoming popular, as it is, something like that could lead to some really nice video's of the game, and possibly even an ingame 'movie' made by fans who set up matches to simulate important battles in the universe. Regardless for INGAME play, First Person only is how it should be, you can still look around the cockpit, and if the mech allows for it, see out the 'side' windows/viewscreen's.

Given the timeline, if we're going for in-universe accuracy, the display depends on the mech, the production year of the machine, ect. for instance, some mechs have the ability to take a 360degree view and condense it into 180 degrees. However I feel for simplicity of play, just allow for a single first person view, with maybe a rear view camera [IE what's already available in Mechwarrior 4] and leave the third person stuff to a theater mode that records the matches... much like Halo or COD at this point.

im in favor of first person; however, I think it would be nice to have certian game play matches in 3rd person kind of like mw2 were you could choose a game type to play. im mean if you cant see your mech why have the ability to color your mech?

1st person all the way. 3rd person gives an unfair tactical advantage (seeing around buildings, etc.) The whole "information warfare" aspect of the game will be effectively ruined if everyone has an external camera floating behind them.

To identify yourself to friends and enemies? Just imagine - "Oh crap it's that guy again with the pink bunny ears painted on his mech's head! He totally cored me last match... I'm so screwed..." ;)

I have a suggestion: cam-drones could be bought to record and replay battles (a limited amount of recordings per drone), maybe the player could even publish them as machinima. The camera angles and movement could be set afterwards to analyze the situation better or give a nicer angle to the scene in question (such as a torn-off limb tumbling over the viewer).

Go look at your mech in the mechlab. Out in the battlefield, man up and start firing your lasers.

I have no problem with first person view only, bu at least give others an option for second or third person views.

The game's been developed so far to be true to the universe and bring back the big bad "I'm in a mech!" kind of feel that won the Mechwarrior series so many awards for best simulation game. Third person DOES give an unfair advantage by giving you so much more to see, and it gives the player the option to totally ignore the hard work put into making the cockpit of the mech feel so real. Outside of replays of watching your mech get totaled, I don't see any reason for third-person viewing.
