The two best so far, that I see a lot of in CW as well, Thunderbolt for its Close Range Wub Brawling, or Jager for its amazing firesupport. Both are extremely capable, and deadly when played to their strengths.

It's nasty. I like it. I'm not even a sniper/PPC kinda guy.
The Jager was much more difficult for me to learn - positioning is a lot more critical with it because it's slow and usually runs an XL (Thunderbolts are best with STDs). But it can do quad AC5 or triple UAC5, and dual Gauss, and the hero version can use PPCs instead. My JM6-A is a close range SRM+Shotgun build and I've had a lot of fun with it using a fast engine. Never really got into the whole LRM thing, myself.

So my recommendation is Jager/Thunderbolt if you don't have either, then Cataphract, then Orion or Quickdraw, and if you are crazy, the Dragon.
The best on tonnage in CW? The Thunderbolt. Even the Jager is niche to some competitive leagues. However a Quickdraw might be needed for small tonnage limits and whatnot in CW.

Snipe or lurming with a xl in a heavy is fine , Brawling ?
I wouldn't recommend it. You lose all your survivability in a tanky mech at point blank range

Given that you're Davion:
Thunderbolt, Jagermech, Cataphract, or Orion.
For using an XL engine, Thunderbolt could do it but I prefer not to use an XL on it. Jagermech's pretty decent for the job.

well ... flat out this ist just useless advice.
The Timber Wolf is a clanmech which means it will come with a clan-xl-engine (which is different to a IS-xl-engine) and also that this engine is fixed to the chassie and can not be changed.
---
For a first heavy mech I would recommend:
IS: Jaeger - there are a lot of effective builds available for that and thx to the high mounted balistic hardpoints it can use cover on many maps better than many other heavy mechs.
Clan: Timberwolf or Hellbringer - the Timberwolf will take more punishment and might have a sligthly higher firepower but the Hellbringer can use ECM. Also you should consider that people when they see a Timberwolf and a Hellbringer - they will most likely shot the Timberwolf.
Just keep in mind: if you go for a clan-mech you won't be able to use any stuff from your IS-mechs, neither weapons nor engines

sorry but I have to disagree, the Clans are not flat out better than the IS in MWO, however the Timber Wolf and StormCrow are flat out better than any IS Mechs in the same weight class.
with the exception of those 2 mechs none of the Clan Mechs are flat out better than IS Mechs, although the Mad Dog, Hellbringer, Warhawk and Dire Wolf are still very good Mechs equivalent to top IS Mechs

IS: Thunderbolt all day... Jaeger is not a bad mech if you like the "Daka"
Clan: Timberwolf all day.
HINT: Do not use a XL engine in a Thunderbolt.

With the exception of very fast light mechs and the Direwolf/Crab ultra ezmode assault tanks the lines have been blurred a lot on what mech classes are used for what role.
