So, I'm about to be able to get a heavy mech. Any recommendations? (I have an XL 275 currently in my garage in case that would affect a choice.) I usually run a brawler/fire support build.

The two best so far, that I see a lot of in CW as well, Thunderbolt for its Close Range Wub Brawling, or Jager for its amazing firesupport. Both are extremely capable, and deadly when played to their strengths.

The Thunderbolt also has a variant which favours triple ER PPC.

It's nasty. I like it. I'm not even a sniper/PPC kinda guy. ^_^

The Jager was much more difficult for me to learn - positioning is a lot more critical with it because it's slow and usually runs an XL (Thunderbolts are best with STDs). But it can do quad AC5 or triple UAC5, and dual Gauss, and the hero version can use PPCs instead. My JM6-A is a close range SRM+Shotgun build and I've had a lot of fun with it using a fast engine. Never really got into the whole LRM thing, myself.

Cataphract and Orion are both half decent. The Catapult is difficult to use and most prefer the Jager over the K2. The Quickdraw is only with hardcore units in the competitive league. The Dragon is an absolute glass cannon.

So my recommendation is Jager/Thunderbolt if you don't have either, then Cataphract, then Orion or Quickdraw, and if you are crazy, the Dragon.

The best on tonnage in CW? The Thunderbolt. Even the Jager is niche to some competitive leagues. However a Quickdraw might be needed for small tonnage limits and whatnot in CW.

Out of Catapults, Jagermechs, Cataphracts, Orions, and Thunderbolts, I have the greatest success in the Jagermech. But it didn't start out that way. I hated the thing when I was first leveling it up, but once I got used to it, I loved it. Unlocking all the skills helps too.

Catapult also has very small Side Torso's, making it especially viable for running XL's, if you're so inclined.

Edit: Atrocious spelling.

Timberwolf for clan without a doubt , I like the orion IS wise , A lot would probably say jagermech meh, But yeah timberwolf is probably the best clan heavy and definitely a better option for a XL engine then any IS mech as they have to lose both torsos before destroyed and are at the top of there class weight and armour wise. Meh up to you though.

Snipe or lurming with a xl in a heavy is fine , Brawling ?

I wouldn't recommend it. You lose all your survivability in a tanky mech at point blank range

Welp....
Given that you're Davion:

Thunderbolt, Jagermech, Cataphract, or Orion.

For using an XL engine, Thunderbolt could do it but I prefer not to use an XL on it. Jagermech's pretty decent for the job.

well ... flat out this ist just useless advice.

The Timber Wolf is a clanmech which means it will come with a clan-xl-engine (which is different to a IS-xl-engine) and also that this engine is fixed to the chassie and can not be changed.

---

For a first heavy mech I would recommend:

IS: Jaeger - there are a lot of effective builds available for that and thx to the high mounted balistic hardpoints it can use cover on many maps better than many other heavy mechs.

Clan: Timberwolf or Hellbringer - the Timberwolf will take more punishment and might have a sligthly higher firepower but the Hellbringer can use ECM. Also you should consider that people when they see a Timberwolf and a Hellbringer - they will most likely shot the Timberwolf.

Just keep in mind: if you go for a clan-mech you won't be able to use any stuff from your IS-mechs, neither weapons nor engines

^ I failed to see how your post made my point invalid he wanted a heavy I suggested the best IS and clan heavy IMHO , Orion for IS (most would disagree ) I just love my orion , A and Timber wolf for clan , And no matter what anyone says clans are flat out better then IS , So its the best heavy option making it not useless advice at all, If your referring to the fact I said XLs were weak brawling the fact you have to blow both torsos with clans sort of negates that or makes it more viable ,I would recommend the wolf to anyone it can pack a decent punch , has some manoeuvrability and can take a lot of hits. Top tier heavy .

sorry but I have to disagree, the Clans are not flat out better than the IS in MWO, however the Timber Wolf and StormCrow are flat out better than any IS Mechs in the same weight class.

with the exception of those 2 mechs none of the Clan Mechs are flat out better than IS Mechs, although the Mad Dog, Hellbringer, Warhawk and Dire Wolf are still very good Mechs equivalent to top IS Mechs

Thunderbolts are great mechs and you can make most of them run well with a std engine. An xl275 is however a perfectly sized engine for the catapult variants. It just seems to fit in all the variants. My suggestion would really be to go with the thunderbolts though

Well. it appears to have boiled down to Jager or Catapult with the XL275, or just buying a Thundy and running around with it's STD engine. Fun fun, haha. Thanks for the suggestions.

IS: Thunderbolt all day... Jaeger is not a bad mech if you like the "Daka"
Clan: Timberwolf all day.

HINT: Do not use a XL engine in a Thunderbolt.

Maybe change your criteria from "Looking for a heavy mech" to "Looking for something I can use like a heavy mech"

With the exception of very fast light mechs and the Direwolf/Crab ultra ezmode assault tanks the lines have been blurred a lot on what mech classes are used for what role.
