Not only do i play Mechwarrior games, my Dad does to but at an Age of 77 and a with bad health he is not fit for PvP, probably even me is not fit anymore, depending how much shooterlike this game may become. I hope for a simulation approach.
Still he would like to hang around with old friends and do some CoOps - even if its only an simulation-simulation

The reason I always avoided PVP in all of the Mechwarrior games (Mercnet and up) Was that you log into the ready room, get cussed at dissed by a couple of 14 year olds, launch the match to find out they're all in some sort of online league or another, and shoot you to hell and back before your sys-check is complete.
That's what I want to avoid.

Also some like the idea, "... one person can make a difference." And oddly they want to "feel" that accomplishment in their game play, which is unlikely in multi-player.

Probably because it diverts valuable resources from the online part (you know, stuff like bug fixes, balance tweaks, etc.).

Yea, exactly, i think there are a lot more older gamers out there than people think. Most of the ones i know avoid pvp. And the nice thing about older gamers,, they dont mind opening up their wallets and spending a little cash. When your retired, gaming is one of the cheapest forms of entertainment there is..

Let the market decide.. If noone buys it, then they wont develope it. but it has the potential to be a huge boon to the game. Say they pull in enough money to double or tripple the amount of devs, like has happened in many FTP games. That would mean you would have more resources, Not less.
To start with, id say your right though, just because they dont know what sales will be till they start. But to completely ignore it, i just dont think it would be a good idea. Even if they launched, or soon after launch came out with a small mini campain. something even as small as 5 missions.. and see how it goes from there.
the game also has the benifit of, there wouldnt be another game like it so really no compition. there arnt any giant robot MMO's.. which definatly has something going for it. To me mech warrior could be soo much more than launching into a pvp battle in an arena..

Then play better. One person can make all the difference. Have a lance of fire support, three longbows/catapults, and bring a light/medium with a narc. You've just turned your lance from decent to devastating. Any number of ways to make a large contribution, it just requires a little bit more thought than mindlessly mashing the trigger.

Seeing as all the previous games had it in them, it's more required than you could think.
People mostly playied SP with the crappy and expensive connection at the time and the campaign, or running a merc group was fun.

It can revitalize the entire series without having to have everything but the kitchen sink in it. Let it bring the franchise out of it's coma, and then other games can come down later that cover other game modes. This is being billed as a Online MP experience, and it should stay that way. If it starts trying to do to much it could be worse off for the wear.

I would get behind that. They should bring back Sgt. Unther from MW2:Mercs.

I wonder if he's still training at this point in the timeline...The training mission started June 1st 3044 in MW2:Mercs, and he was talking about retiring with a 2 bed 2 bath back on outreach...

I'd like that though, and I think it would be a good idea. I know bots are tough to implement for games like this but even bad ai can be fun (look at the previous games & instant action). I think they should add it in there to experiment with weaponry/loadouts and/or practice the controls. I doubt it would cost much money or time to implement, and people would appreciate it, if only to familiarize themselves with the maps.
Personally, I would love a new campaign/story-based MW, but this isn't that. I will love this too. Hopefully the success of this game will lead to another single-player MW game. Until then I'll just replay the old ones - I never actually did finish Pirate's Moon...
