I always thought the purpose of a Commando was to chase down and slag 20-ton Scout Mechs (Wasp/Locust/Stinger) with an SRM barrage.
Just sayin'.
Don't you mean chase down any ton mech

. What people don't seem to realize, is that SRMs have been upgraded significantly since other MW games. Speaking from MW2:Mercs and MW4's perspective, the SRM's used to fire a stream of missiles, which made it difficult to aim in a lot of situations. In MWO, Srm's are fired instantaneously in a volley(as seen from leaked beta gameplay, and developer videos). Not only does this allow the SRMs to be used to hit targets more quickly and effectively, but it additionally allows mechs to fire them and turn away immediately, without having to worry about the missiles spraying sideways as you turn. Another thing people neglect, is that Srms have a very short recycle (2 seconds) and heat generation. Sure the jenner has 4 medium lasers and a srm 4, but with 10 srms, the Commando has higher DPS, as SRMS deal their damage instantly, and have a 50% faster recycle time when compared to medium lasers. Additionally, you can dart out from cover and fire the srms off nearly instantly and hide, where as with medium lasers you need to stay out for 2 seconds to get the most of out it.
Just do the math, 10 Srm's is 20 damage, divide that by a recycle of 2 seconds, and you have 10 damage per second on a target. If you manage to get behind a target, which with the commandos speed shouldn't be a problem, you'll be able to shred armor to pieces. The commandos strength is its raw firepower for a light mech.
