As the topic title.

XP is gained at such a snails' pace early on. How do you get through it the quickest?

Play the game. :) Play, just enjoy the game.. don't focus on the xp. The xp will show up over time without premium.

Kills and damage are easy, but play and learn the game.. get wins, make sure to take advantage of the 2x each day and you'll get the xp easy enough. :)

Mmm, farming the x2 bonus doesn't sound so bad actually. Thx :D

You need a lot of mechs to level at the same time though.

depends a little if you can spare a few C-Bills every match
a UAV will definitely help
(also winning a match and a UAV can rally some support really fast)
even if you're in an assault depending on the situation it might be worth to have it always with you, at least xp wise

target decay for longer locks -> assists
more TAG -> assists
maybe you can spare an energy slot somewhere and just keep it going

Friendship.

No, seriously. LRMs, UAV, NARC spots, etc. MWO rewards people for ganging up, and missile lobbers do it naturally.

Buy all 3 variants at the same time, play each daily to collect the double XP bonus for first win of the day. Play a few extra matches, rinse repeat.

Premium time really helps, of course, but you don't always have that option, especially as a free player. Keep your eye open for events where you can win premium time or double XP weekends!

On this note - remember that the Trial mechs earn XP as well (you just cannot spend it until you own that variant)

And on that note - you do not have to own the (C) variant itself - as (for example) the CN9-A(C) counts as the same variant as the CN9-A.

Grinding a mech after you already get the 1st win of the day is actually the best way to learn to play the variant. It seems slow, but by the time you get up to the elite tier, you will notice you are doing much better with that mech.

When I got the Phoenix pack, I almost immediately dropped the two extra locusts because I sucked at them. Recently I got back into the locusts (and picked up the PB with the sale this week) and grinding the XP I have become much better with them. Also, the quirks help a lot.

Grinding does indeed suck at first, but the experience you get from running the mech make it much better.

Win or lose, how you play and interact with your team is where it is at. Living til the end of the match is not a guarantee of a big payoff.

After each match click on the player (2nd tab), it will show you how you did and where the points came from. FYI there is a bug that if you have any bonuses (1st win etc), the Subtotal not actually being reflected, that number is a copy of the the overall total. Hopefully that will be fixed soon.

If you've got multiple mechs don't hesitate to quit if you die early and jump in your next mech. I've heard this messes with your xp but I don't think it does. I'm sure someone will correct me if it does.

Also any xp earned on trial mechs will carry over to the standard variant if you decide to buy it. I'm not talking about spending MC on the champion either. There will be a chassis type which has the same name (different loadout) but without the 'C' at the end which you can buy for c-bills.

It seems to sometimes delay the XP a bit (~5-20 minutes after you get the mech back)
But what testing-math I have done on it has added up (eventually)

Unless I am mistaken, staying until the bitter end nets you xp from assists on any mechs killed after your demise, logging out loses this possibility. So, if you've been running around tagging every enemy you see (which is a good way of getting xp) then it's worth watching your team mates. Not to mention, if you're a novice, you might just learn something by watching.

Used to be using LRMs to rack up assists but LRMs are extremely unreliable. The most reliable way is to use ER Lasers and hit enemies at range. This way, if your team successfully kills the target, you get an assist bonus. The key is stick with the team to abuse the bonuses and you want to stay alive as long as possible. Dying early does not help you gain Cbills or Exp.

If you notice your opponents never equip AMS or ECM, slap LRMs on your mech, then rack up damage bonus and assist bonuses.

It does... any assist you get after you leave will not count, and they count more than kills..

other than that.. If you quit you don't learn... Watching others plays is the worth it's weight in gold. People that don't watch.. end up sucking 10x longer than those that watch and learn.

get UAV, and art strike.. helps a ton as well

Thanks for all the advise ppl :-)

Has anyone ever done the math of when it is better to not stay until the end and quit a match or when to wait until the game is over? I guess you'd need a lot of stats to get to a get to a good "rule of thumb"

well.. say ya get 5 assist after death... that is 5X assists.. i forget how much an assist is.. but it is worth staying for the most part.. besides you can help your team by calling positions, and targets and such

If your team is getting stomped and you were killed early on it's not worth the trouble staying in as there will likely be very few additional kill assists. Your time is better spent on another mech in a match you may get more assists in. If your team is winning, stay on.

Also, try and keep a mental tally of how many different enemy mechs you've hit for those Assist bonusses. If you die and have only hit 2 different mechs, it's not really worth sticking around if you've another mech you can drop in instead.

Is it still "Stay in the match to reap rewards"? Because I thought they fixed that...

Lets see... I can't help beyond reiterating can I?
Put much effort in each day's 2x win.
Using UAV's properly (when close to an enemy clump) is a surefire, economical way to farm XP.
Racking up assists is a solid earner.

Free Premium Time is a thing that occurs, it would seem. Keep a weather eye out for promo codes like the one posted above (is holiday2014 still good? Won't hurt to try it).

EDIT
