I did a bit of searching around the forums but I can't really figure this out. I got the Atlas with my elite founder's pack which I know is the AS7-D but I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade it to be like an AS7-K. From what I can tell they should both have the same hardpoints but the K has an XL engine. Will it be possible to just upgrade the engine then change the loadouts? Obviously with some variants the hardpoints are completely different (Catapult C1 and K2 for example) but I'm not sure that's the case with these two variants.

You have to buy/unlock the AS7-K variant.

You have to unlock it to get the variant, but I wonder if you have to unlock the variant to just upgrade the prime to an XL engine...

Until we get access to the game we shouldn't assume you buy the K variant of the Atlas to put an XL engine in it.

So without unlocking the K I assume you could still swap out the AC20 for a Gauss Rifle to make it better at long range?

Yeah no reason you couldn't swap the AC for the gauss rifle I think.

I kinda hope engine is tied to chassis though.

Why would ANYONE want an AS7-K?! :P

I mean the one who designed this thing was pure genius. He menaged to make a mech WORSE by using Starleague Tech. It's now a walking frying pan coffin. I mean IS XL on a slow assault originally made to go in your face, AND ER Lasers with SINGLE heatsinks combo.

The AS7-K is a different variant that you'd have to buy separately. However from my understanding of the mechbay you could essentially turn the founder AS7-D into a virtual clone of the AS7-K, although it would still be called the AS7-D. But of course only the devs and those on the beta really know.

That's what I was thinking. I guess we'll have to wait and see to determine what exactly you can change on a given variant though.

If you look into the Battletech history, you'll find that at the time, the Draconis Combine (makers of the AS7-K) only had access to certain Star League era weapons and equipment. Double Heat Sinks weren't one of them.

Well, they certainly did have access to exploding belts, but somehow they did manage to NOT mount them on the AS7-K (though it would probably be a pretty efficent usage for the original Dragon). Having an access to something does not make it necessary to use.

So, related to Topic title... it's better the ATLAS AS7-D or the ATLAS AS7-K?

Before spending my credits, I hope someone would help me to decide... :D

Wow this is an old topic.

There is some difference in hardpoints between the D and K variants of the Atlas, in that the D has one more ballistic and one more missile hardpoint, while the K has an extra AMS hardpoint.

Because the in-game prices in C-bills and MC are reflective of the actual value of the equipment, there is no real added "value" in the K variant. In fact you lose two really good hardpoints that add versatility to the D model. The only real advantage of the K over the D is the extra AMS hardpoint, which makes it probably the best platform for a "command mech." However, since the game currently doesn't have any mechanics (yet) that make having a "command mech" advantageous, the K model currently doesn't have any sort of outstanding performance benefits, and it's really little more than a downgraded D model with some good equipment thrown in as "freebies."

Despite that, I still bought a K model with some of my founders MC, mostly because the K comes with a 300 XL engine which I currently use in three different mech builds I run, and it saved me from buying the expensive engine by itself. Eventually when there is a real in-game benefit of running a "command mech," I'll slap two AMSs on my Atlas K and a Command Console and play King of the Battlefield.

Both are fine, if you buy a K sell the 300XL and put in a STD or you will die. A lot.

So, after I "frankensteinezed" this topic, I understand this:

1: as they are currently selled, Atlas-D is better and cheaper than Atlas-K

2: I can buy an Atlas-K but replace XL engine with Standard one, but that's more even expensive action.

conclusion: better buy an Atlas-D and then D-DC and RS to master Atlas, waiting until the K variant become more appreciable in the future.

Am I right?

Thanks in advance to everybody

Check my guide to see what kind of builds you can do and pick the one you like. It's worth noting that the D and DC models have identical hardpoints except DC has one more missile spot (still in the left torso though).
