After The Tdr 9S Nerf

IS will go back to being second string, Clan will dominate again, all the "skilled" players will hop back to Clan mechs - and remind us that mech choice has no effect on their special "skills" - and CW will continue its slide into irrelevance with an ever increasing number of matches being decided when the teams are chosen and with even less of a reason to play IS.

OH WAIT!...The Catapult K2....Duh!
Doesn't really matter though. If the Thud gets nerfed or stays the same, it is what it is. I don't see the mech as THAT OP, but to each their own I suppose.
It just still surprises me that the K2 has never really shaped into the sniper it should be. The new PPC quirks helped, but not quite enough. It really should have gotten the Thud 9S's ERPPC quirks. Just my opinion though.

There is no other IS mech that competes really well at long range with the clans ... and if there is a problem with the 9S ... that is it.
In the public queues the 9S is less of a factor ... if you are taking a heavy mech the best choice is the Timberwolf or possibly a Hellbringer. Both provide more speed, more firepower and in the case of the Timberwolf more armor than the 9S. Hellbringer adds ECM. Timberwolf variants can also have jump jets. On most of the regular maps the sniper capability of the 9S isn't much of a factor.
Some folks use a 3 ERPPC build on the 9S ... maybe that is the issue since it can fire three times before overheating even with ghost heat (it overheats on the 3rd shot). On the other hand the dual ERPPC can fire something like 7 times in succession before overheating. Effectively this means it can fire just the 2 x ERPPC almost continuously. However, as soon as anything else fires (like MPL or other energy weapons) the 9S overheats pretty quickly.
Anyway, as long as the 9S represents one of the few decent long range IS mechs for use in CW ... you will probably continue to see them used. A slight heat efficiency nerf on the ERPPC might be in order so that ghost heat shuts down the 3 ERPPC version after 2 volleys instead of 3 ... but otherwise ... I am not sure that much adjustment is required unless the goal is to make the IS incapable of effectively engaging clans at long range.

Yet, it has ammo and XL requirements. And lower mounts. That whole area above the cockpit will be see before you crest, but that's minimal.
It also has explosive arms.
Which is why it is not top tier, not competitive against the clan's best and why taking three of them across a 12 man would be begging for failure.
IS has to remain a second class garbage faction, so the forums will continue to beg for nerfs on the two actually competitive heavies.

some things are self evident....I agree the Madcat and Doomcrow could use some nerfing.
I also see that the 9S is OP because of these quirks...and could also use some nerfing.
But I think the idea that the IS has no viable options in each weight class to be an overstatement, even pre - quirkening.

I mean seriously, the 9S is mostly complained about based on Boreal, where there is a problem for sure. But outside Boreal? It's not some OMG OP NERF PLZ mech like it gets made out to be. Just a very good mech.

Assaults:
King Crab
Banshee
Stalkers
Wubmasters
Victors
Heavies:
Twin Gauss Jeagers.
Cataphracts
Dragon
Medium wubstorm Thunderbolt
Mediums:
Shadowhawk
Centurion (yen-lo-wang)
Hunchback (lrms and gridron gauss storm)
Wubverines
Blackjacks
Lights:
Firestarter
Raven
Spider
These mechs are really good, the only problem is, people don't want to take 2 good assaults and some lights. they want to take 3-4 heavies and maybe a medium. I mean the Stalker 4N has LL quirks and with the range module they reach as far as the ER versions for less heat, and shorter beam duration!
You want range, then play a mech with range, but you all really don't ******* care about the "range disadvantage" you just want PPC storms.

Outside of the 5SS & 9S, nothing else can compete against SCR, HBR & TBR in the 50 to 75 ton range.
It will be fun to watch most of the top comp teams suddenly switch back to clan.
Well, if they actually do switch back just because of changes to the TDR (no matter what cheap excuse they give), that will tell a whole lot of unflattering things about them.

True ...but it is still OP by design, just because nobody noticed it or not that many complained until now doesn't mean its not OP. Just because it may not be used as much on Sulfur (I saw it all day in teams on Sulfur map yesterday) doesn't mean its not OP. Its OP because it can fire at least 3-4 salvos of 2+1 ERPPC without overheating as fast as the cycle will let you. Which currently no other 65 tonner with that kind of mobility can even come close to duplicating. They just over quirked it....it needs a tone down...not a nerf bat to the head, just a tone down...which PGI will do this month.

Here's a table calculating some numbers as to what the trade will do, along with the AWS-8Q to compare them to PPCs.
I and a few others seem to prefer switching them. By lore, the Awesome is the (ER)PPC boat.

Yes, the Mist Lynx can do some insane things. But, it just ain't no Ember or Spider. But I blame that on the crippled JJs we now have ... and the lag-induced invincibility shield on IS lights.
